With a PhD in chemistry & an MBA in Int'l Business, is there a job (eg, teaching) for an American in Colombia?
My wife is from Cali and I have been there to visit 3 times. So I have some knowledge and a lot of appreciation for Colombia and its people. With the "live-in tutor," my Spanish is getting stronger and my listening comprehension is at the point where I can follow the news. Ideally, Cali would be great because my young children can get to know my wife's side of the family better. Other cities like Bogota and Medellin would be good too. As to what I could offer a prospective employer, I am a native English speaker. Moreover, I have more than 15 years of industrial R&D and manufacturing support; along with 5+ years of teaching and tutoring adult students in chemistry, mathematics and other physical sciences in university and community college settings. I have also done projects in the areas of economic development and technical customer service (usually manufacturing troubleshooting).

Dont go there, it is unsafe

If you've been there 3 times and have an appreciation for the country, why ask here? Also why the "(e.g. teaching)". With those credentials, you would probably get a higher paying job than teaching in whatever country.
3 :
you should check the peace corps. to see if they place people in colombia.

If Obama studied in Colombia like he claims he did, how come he doesn't speak Spanish?

If Obama studied in Colombia like he claims he did, how come he doesn't speak Spanish?
Supposedly after he spent two years at a place called Accidental College in Californiastan and couldn't make the grade at an American college he hauled himself off to Colombia to get his degree. A degree in what? Cocaine snorting which he admits in his books. This man is a disgrace. Not only was he not born in this country but he was also not even educated here and doesn't even speak a word of Spanish. He must of been the dumbest student in that Colombian college.

there's a cure for what you have, but you have to be open to it

He doesn't speak American either. People have been asking to see a birth certificate for several years and all he produced is a COLB document. I guess he doesn't understand what a birth certificate is. Here are some examples of a real birth certificate in contrast to an application for a COLB which is applied for several days after birth https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjQjsrpcRyP-13nKvekGW0kPZiDyhDf4us6wmYkMqOyVozSHSYg9yGRyYwzd38haEaV_OO4TJbLFrpQZ1raI2-dfcu4woCY1I6gC-leelu04amPnPoEOMEkKruhxAmq5EeXNZnrK15PjU/s1600-h/Obama+-+kenya+birth+certificate.jpg http://web.archive.org/web/20040627142700/eastandard.net/headlines/news26060403.htm http://images.quickblogcast.com/4/2/6/6/5/166425-156624/Obamas_Birth_Certificate_png.jpg http://sites.google.com/site/obamabirth/_/rsrc/1256108146604/Home/obama-short-form-birth-certificate/Obama-Hawaii-Birth-Shows-Kenyat.jpg http://www.westernjournalism.com/exclusive-investigative-reports/clearing-the-smoke-june10/

I kind of hope your post is a joke. He did study for two years in Occidental College in LA then transferred to Columbia University, which is in New York, not Columbia, so there is no reason why he should speak Spanish. A few years later he also went to Harvard Law School. He was born in Hawaii in 1961, and as Hawaii was made the 50th US state in 1959, so he was both born and educated in America. apart from about 4 years between 67 and 71 (ie when he was 6 to 10 years old) when he went to school in Indonesia.

It's sometimes hard to see the joke, but yours is obvious.

Please post more questions like this in the days before November's elections. Your party has been claiming that people like you don't exist. Thank you.

When did school start in Colombia?
I know that kids and college students in Colombia get a vacation in the middle of the year, but with a crapload of homework, but when did school in Colombia start recently? Are there different school systems for each major city in Colombia? If so, please tell me, because I've been trying to get a hold of an old schoolfriend from kindergarten... *Head slap* I mean when did school start this year? I thought the clue "RECENTLY" would tell you whe did school start THIS YEAR!

4 :
well here in bogota you have 2 types of schools: private and public: the calendar in the public schools is the same for all schools and is controlled by the government, for example they just changed the time that school starts from 6 30 to 7 because of the flu. then you have the private schools which control their own schedules but are divided in two types : calendario a and calendario b Calendario a starts school (or the new schools year) in december and has long vacations in christmas while calendario b starts school in august - september and has long vacations in summer. so it depends if your friend is in a public or a private school and if she is in a private school then you have to know which one it is as schools have 2 different calendars but for example two different private schools with the same calendar b could start one in august 14 for example and one in early september

I'm going to Bogota, Colombia in a week. Any advice?

I'm going to Bogota, Colombia in a week. Any advice?
My friend was a foreign exchange student here last year from Colombia and next week I am going to visit her. I have a friend that went there on spring break last year and he said it was fun but he's a guy. Is there anything that I need to worry about? I'm going to be with her and her parents most of the time but I am a white girl going to be around a lot of latinos and I'm going to stick out like a sore thumb! I'm just a worry wart but I just need things to be precautious about and what's safe to do and what's not. Please answer it will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Hell yes. Don't look too American or else you will draw unwanted attention. Like thieves. Columbia is really screwed up right now. Not enough cops, high crime rates. trust me i'm from Venezuela. be careful! Don't go out late at night. I'd be extra careful if you dont know Spanish.
2 :
Yeah it is very dangerous there and you seem quite good looking which will attract a lot of attention. If I were you I would stay inside!
3 :
Bogota is a relatively safe city. Take the same precautions you would in any other large city (e.g don't go out alone at night, stay in well lit areas, watch for pickpockets). As for sticking out like a sore thumb. There are a lot of tourists in Bogota. You aren't going to the be the only caucasian there. Also, latinos come in every color. You should be fine.
4 :
one advice, take care of your life.
5 :
try not to get kidnapped
