UK or Brazil

How did you make this list without knowing anything about the economics, politics and etc. about them? Study the countries before deciding you would love to live there. Also figure how you are going to support yourself there and if you can speak their language. I will add that there are more people from these countries moving to the USA that there US Americans moving there, but don't consider the USA - it is crowded enough.

Does going to competitive colleges like Rice U increase career opportunities?

Does going to competitive colleges like Rice U increase career opportunities?
First I would like to say that I am a Texan. My "ultimate dream school" would be Rice University. However, I don't feel like I have the grades for this school. I mean, I don't have terrible grades but Rice has really high standards. What do y'all think? Do I have some chance of admission to the following schools: Rice U, Baylor, UT Austin, Colombia U, USC? To help you decide, here are some of my current academic statistics as a senior: --GPA 3.65 (unweighted and on a 4 pt scale) --ACT 29 --Taken all honors/AP classes since freshman year --Involved in Key club, Earth Club, and Hispanic Club. I am secretary for Hispanic Club. --Inducted last year into Spanish NHS (I am treasurer) and received a highly regarded school award that recognizes student's who make a true impact in the school community --This summer I received from collegeboard my certificate stating I am an "AP Scholar" --Played Cross Country --I might be inducted into regular NHS (National Honor Society) this year --Work part time *************************************** My dad says I should just go to a community college and then transfer to the local public university. I told him going to competitive colleges like Rice U will increase my job opportunities after graduation than going to a small public university. Is this true? **************************************** Please give me your honest opinion on which colleges I am "MOST LIKELY" to get accepted to. Also explain why you think so. What are some last minute things I could improve on that could definitely help me?

You've got just about everything you need to get into any college you want. If you really want to go to one of the universities then you need to just apply to all of them and see which one accepts you. If two accept you then great you have a choice. However, your dad is right, it really won't matter in the end where you get your degree, most companies just care what you got, not where you got it.
2 :
With your strong background, you should certainly try for a competitive university. There are at least three reasons for doing so: 1. Competing will sharpen your skills...not only educationally, but socially and psychologically. You will be at the top of your game. This will be especially valuable when you enter the work force. 2. You will meet people who will be able to help you after you graduate. These include not only faculty and administration, but your classmates. Remember too: Competitive colleges usually have very active alumni associations that "look out for their own." Recommendations and referrals are coin of the realm when looking for a job ... getting a promotion ... going out after sales. 3. Competitive colleges graduate the cream of the crop -- from the service academies to the instantly recognizable regional/national giants, like Rice. Prospective employers will scan your c.v. (resume) with heightened interest when they see the name of your alma mater, and, of course, many of them, will be the product of similar schools. You should also consider Columbia and USC, if your finances allow it. I would also put Stanford, Northwestern and Georgetown on your A list. By no means spend time at a community college...not with your sterlilng background. Go for the gold, now and for the rest of your life!

Can somebody please help me!!!!!?

Can somebody please help me!!!!!?
This is my story... im 19 years old, i was born in Colombia and from the day i was born my life has been a disaster, as i was told when my mom gave birth to me one week later she abandoned me and left me with my father alone. When i was 3 my father had the opportunity to move out to United States for a better future for me,i dont even look spanish im 5´11, white skin, brown hair and blue eyes. i was raised in the states, i went to school and i graduated from high school 2 years ago. But my father never cleared up our permanence in the states as legal residents and i had no clue about it till October 13th 2006 when 2 homeland security agents walked into our house and said, you are illegal aliens grab your passports you´re going back home! i said home? this is my home! he said, well apparently to homeland security you´re not LETS GO! and so we were sent back ¨HOME¨ we lost everything we had, the apartment we lived in was ours but it was not fully paid for, and the car was a lease, we were left with NOTHING in a country that i didn't even remembered because i was 3 when my dad took me to the states now i was 18. We had nothing, no family no nothing but 4.000$ dollars that my dad was able to pick up at a atm in the homeland security building in miami. I didn't even speak spanish just my father did. The 4000 dollars that we had left lasted us for about 2 months, than my dad had to get a job as a deliveryman and from there on i started taking spanish lessons and so we sorta went on with our lives even tho we were broken and depressed after that but we went on! but my father was so depressed that for him only alcohol would cure his wounds and bacame an alcoholic and died of cirrhosis on october 14th 2008 exactly 2 years and 1 day after that happening. He was all i had left and now my life is even more misserable! 3 months before he died i met a girl and fell in love with her, im still with her and shes the only reason i havent taken my life away. Im trying to go on just for her, i work in a supermarket washing fruits and vegetables making 420.000 pesos that equals 200 us dollars a month but i feel like i cant go on anymore, im broken, sad, desperate, depressed i dont know how to explain this feeling. How could they have done this to me? to my father? he was a good man, a hard worker, i was a good student, a good son. But now theres nothing i can do, i wish death upon me but im too coward to take my own life away, im afraid, maybe i dont wanna die but what alse can i do? i wish the whole world could hear me out, But i still have hope theres someone out there that can help me in any way. Please some one!!!

I am very sorry I cannot help you even if I wanted to very much, but I live in Tunisia... Could you not make your story public ? I mean try to make contact with american newspapers, get Oprah and Dr Phil to know your story ? I know it is not easy in Colombia though. But as you have at least access to internet, you could try to send tons of letters to every association, TV social program and newspaper you can find... No harm in trying, I would say. Keep us posted anyway, and all the best
2 :
Languages is not the right section for this question, sir. Why don't you appeal the decision to be deported or apply to get a visa back into the US? The homeland security people did this because you were illegal. Period. Your father hadn't completed the paperwork necessary for you to stay. But you should be able to appeal for a right to take a citizenship test and stuff; it's not your fault. And never forget that you have your girl. Try to get her and her family's help in your time of need. Best of luck to you, friend.
3 :
Your situation is heartbreaking, but I don't have much of an idea what to do! However, you might begin by speaking with the nearest American consul, telling him or her what you've said here. Emphasize that, since you were brought to the US as a tinychild, you were innocent of any intentional illegal behavior. Then, since you've graduated from high school, one logical next step is college. If your Spanish isn't good enough yet for you to go to college there in Colombia, you can inquire about the length of time you'll have to wait before returning to the US on a student visa, as well as about any other English-speaking colleges, maybe in the Caribbean, that might be suitable for you. You could also write to any friends of your father's and yours in the US in the hope that they might intercede for you in some way. However, since you have now met a girl you love and want to stay with, another option is to try to build a better life for the two of you there in Colombia. Again, more education is an important step. And one valuable card in your hand is your English. Are there better jobs that you could get there using your English-speaking skills? Maybe in the travel industry? Finally, is there someone there where you live now whom you can talk to? A priest or a counselor? An older friend nearby to encourage you can make a big difference. I realize that trying to speak about such personal and important things in a language you've studied for only two years must be very hard, but please make the effort! If there's a sympathetic English teacher at a school near you, he or she might be a good candidate for that role, even though he or she has no training in counseling. At least that person would be an older friend with whom you can talk easily!
4 :
Wow, that is tough. Colombia is probably one of the last places I would ever think about living, or even visiting for that matter. Does Colombian culture have any redeeming facets at all? Look around you right now - is there anything in your immediate vicinity that brings you any comfort that you didn't have in the U.S.? What interests do you share with your lover? Are there others in your community that also share those interests. Do you think Colombia deserves to survive as a nation? Is there anything you can do to remediate that situation? Do you know anything about Che Guevara? You are a victim of political systems right now - if I were you I would be doing everything in my power to change that - learn as much as you can about the language and culture you are in right now - that knowlege is the tool you need to either improve the culture you are in, or, get the h*** out. Either way, you've got to have tools to work with. Since your father was an alcoholic - I would search out any Alcoholics Anonymous members in your area - there you will find people who either share or can relate to your current plight - I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there you find someone in A.A. who could help you. God (or whatever higher power you subscribe to) bless you, and may He/She/It give you the strength to grow and prosper, and the peace to continue.
5 :
First of all; stop and thank God that you are alive; that you have a roof over your head; a girlfriend; a job; and your health. You have a high school degree and a trade even if all it is is washing fruit. Be grateful for what you have instead of crying for what you have lost. Do you believe in God? If you do, then thank God for what you have. if you do not then you best work on finding God in your life by reaching out and helping those less fortunate than you; for they are legion. Look around you; you are in a depressed area but you have no reason to be depressed. You father made a conscious decision to drink and it killed him. You are not dead. The fact that your mother left is sad but you don't have to lie down and die because she hurt you. Show some backbone and some of that American Grit you claim to have and get on with your life. Save your coins and petition for a visa. Everyone that was not born in the US has to do the same thing and there are millions of LEGAL immigrants here and you can become one if you are willing to do the work. NUFF SAID.

University of choice is Stanford. Am I good enough? Help Please!!?

University of choice is Stanford. Am I good enough? Help Please!!?
I am a 16 year old coming up on her Junior year of high school. I want to major in Political Science at Stanford and hopefully go to law school there as well. My dream job would be to become a divorce/family relations lawyer. I would say that I am pretty smart. I really really really fucked up my sophomore year of high school. Bringing my class rank from 27 to 69 (I'm still top 10%) and my cumulative GPA from 4.4 to 4.0. But my junior year is coming up and I've heard that's the most important. I am taking two honors and an AP class. Now I know it's not much but senior year I'm going to take three AP and three honors. I'm pretty involved in school. I'm in thespians, the musical, speech team and hopefully student council and prom committee. If I pull myself together and get straight A's and bring my class rank down back to the top 5%, pull my cumulative GPA to over a 4.3 and I kick some butt in the entire admission process, do you guys think I could make it? And if not Stanford University, maybe Colombia University? That is my second choice. I would really really appreciate your honesty and advice! Thank you so much.

Going to a college doesn't help you getting into their law school, and you do not need to attend a top law school to be a divorce lawyer. That job often doesn't pay very well, so you're much better off at a state school where the program would be much cheaper - there are tons of out of work lawyers who can't pay off their student loan debt, and 7 years at Stanford would cost a ridiculous amount of money. Same for Columbia (Colombia is the country, Columbia is the university). Anyway, everyone applying to Stanford has the highest grades in the hardest classes and very high test scores, and they take less than 10% of applicants. Also, they want unweighted GPAs. Right now, you're not competitive for a top school.

Can i get kicked out?

Can i get kicked out?
20 right now and gonna be 21 in June next year (2011). Was wondering if my legal guardians could kick me out if they wanted to. Thing is I have been living for 3 years here since I moved from Colombia for my studies and due to some personal issues (mainly between her and my mom) she wants me to move out and i got student loans to pay and it is really hard to get a decent job because i have not graduated yet... Was just wondering if they decided to kick me out of the house (she has done so many times, but i havent moved my things) and move my things out to the street. ty :x

Good schools to transfer to from a community college?

Good schools to transfer to from a community college?
I am a community college student with a gpa of around 3.6, (doing my best to bring that number up). I have a decent amount of extra cirriculars (also doing my best to bring that up). I'll be applying to schools this fall, I was wondering which schools, private and public, I should be applying to. I'm not worrying so much about tuition. So far I'm going to apply to some local private colleges, like Pomona College and UCI,UCLA,UCSD,UC BERKELEY (yes i'm from socal-don't mind going to the east coast for college). I also plan on applying to Colombia, Caltech, Cornel, Princeton, USC and ... University of Chicago (<-- the loser from the east side d: ) [: Really would appreciate a list of nice schools to look at and apply to-even more obscure private ones (anything that might ease my transition into medical school-if i even get in O;-lol ;D).

You need some backup schools. All of the schools you're applying to are very hard to get into. And it's not that I don't think you'll get in... it's that it's smart to have backups, because you never know. You'd want the backups to be strong schools that do a great job of preparing students for med school. I'm thinking maybe Baylor, SUNY Stony Brook, Vanderbilt, Emory, U Florida, U Maryland College Park, UMass Amherst, Rutgers New Brunswick, UConn, U Rochester, George Washington, Auburn, Bucknell. These are well ranked schools that have great reps in the sciences, but which aren't quite as "woah" hard to get into as those you've listed. In addition, some top flight schools that I think you may want to look at: Johns Hopkins, Holy Cross, Washington U in St. Louis, Carnegie Mellon, Tufts, Georgetown, Villanova.
2 :
The main reason I wanted to answer was to caution you. First off, you are applying to too many schools. It costs money to apply and doing a scatter shot across 20 schools hoping that you get into one of them is expensive and unlikely to work out well. I would pick 10 at most, and pick them from different tiers, going from schools you know you can get into to ones that you wish you could. On top of that, your second list of schools seems out of reach for you. For example, Caltech accepts only a handful of transfer students and those students all have top grades from top schools. A 3.6 GPA, if it came from Harvard, would likely be too low to transfer into Caltech. A 3.6 GPA from a community college will have no chance. I do not mean to be mean, just realistic. If you are getting B's at a community college, you will be getting F's at Caltech. I can't speak with as much authority on the rest of those second-list schools, but I would guess that a 3.6 GPA from a community college will not be competitive at any of them (USC being the only one that may still be an option). These are, after all, highly selective universities. I strongly encourage you to think realistically about your applications, as it will save a lot of time and money. As far as your first list goes, I think a lot of those are real stretch schools for you as well. I'm sure you can find a school to transfer to, but I would be looking more at the level of UC Davis or Cal Poly rather than Berkeley. I don't think that you will find it any easier to transfer into a school than it would be to have applied straight out of high school. I would recommend you pick up a copy of the US News college ranking issue and that will give you an idea of what the relative strengths of different schools are what there admissions requirements are. There are literally hundreds of schools that will fulfill your needs, so you need to come up with a more restrictive set of requirements to narrow your search. But, please, be realistic with yourself.

European Union supports communist dictators while lecturing everyone else about freedom?

European Union supports communist dictators while lecturing everyone else about freedom?
This is a recurrent topic (at least in me) but I feel its worthy to post about it because today the Honduran president got ousted (or so we have been told, at least). I am not from Honduras or anything of the like. I was born in Europe but since very small lived in various Latin American countries. And this message is not a reply to what I have seen in Honduras, but more of a generic reflection overall. This time, I will not talk about the United States, everyone talks about them everyday anyways. Today, the European Union, the United Nations, the Organization of the Americas States, they are all condeming the (coup?) against Zelaya. In the past, they had also reacted in a similar way regarding Chavez, and regarding Ecuador before Correa. They also seem to criticize the way Colombia takes ahead its internal war, but hey, its a war, not a Disney Park. Its fine, its OK to criticize coups and such. But the problem with these organizations is that, in reality, they are useless, and if anything, they help dictators. I will say it very simple. -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations when thousands of people were executed in Cuba by Castro? Nowhere! -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations in front of the fact that Fidel Castro has been the king of Cuba, in power for 50 years? Nowhere! What did Europe do about Fidel? Reward him by building hotels! -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations when Burma fell under a big dictatorship? Nowhere! -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations in front of the events at Darfur? Nowhere! -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations during Tianan Meng (spelling?)? Nowhere! -Does the European Union or United Nations care about North Korea? No, all they do is blame each other. Does the European Union / United Nations care that Chavez wants to stay in power until 2050 no matter what anyone says? No. Do they care that Chavez ordered to throw tear gas and jail any student or whoever protests? No. Did they care when the Human Rights watch representative got expelled from Venezuela with no reason? No. What does the European Union do? They pretty much support Colombian guerrillas and Peruvian guerrillas, and any government that puts a stop to them is quickly criticized. -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations when three white men were shot in Bolivia for political reasons? Nowhere! Did they even bother trying to investigate if the claims of a potential magnicide were true? Not at all. -If Zelaya was not ousted, or if he comes back to power, and manages to stay in power for 30 years, will the European Union / United Nations do something about it? You guessed it, they won't. So all the democracy and freedom talk done by the European Union, United Nations, and OAS, is pretty much garbage, all they have achieved is to reward dictators and wannabe- dictators, without any real concern about freedom for people. The European Union and the United Nations and the OAS are made up of a bunch of guys who drink wine and who don't give a crap about the foot citizen. Thats the truth about them. All of these groups could be abolished, and the World would not be very different, except that dictators would not have anyone to support them (internationally). The World can go without them. They only defend freedom in paper. United Nations: They are as useless, or maybe more, than the League of Nations in the 1930s.

In international politics, there always is a double standard (except in India's case, which is bad). Have you not wondered, the US has always had soft corner to all the dictators of the world! They have routinely taken refuge there. And, it talks of DEMOCRACY.
2 :
All very well but what exactly would you have either the United Nations or the European Union DO? Do you think they would send in troops? Neither has a standing army, all require an agreement of all members to get involved in fighting - which is why France and Germany (very sensibly) stayed out of the Iraq mess. It's easy to condemn and say "they should do something" - how about saying what it would be possible for them to do?
3 :
The United Nations is not going to do anything. One of the goals of the New World Order is to have Global control. This means that all nations throughout the world be under their control. The United Nations, a brainchild of the New World Order, is helping to implement a One world government, and is one of the avenues being used to implement global slavery.

How many friends do I really have?

How many friends do I really have?
OK So i have lots of ppl who I consider "friends," but now that I think about it a lot of them seem to be superficial. I will tell u about each of them. WHich ones do u think r genuine friends? Jake Czekaj: The class clown. Jake is really fat but also really nice, although he always plays pranks and stuff on me. He likes making fun of me, but then again he makes fun of almost everyone. He is a lot bigger than me and likes to give me noogies and stuff, not realizing they actually hurt. I like to help him out but he's only helped me out about once. Julie Amuleti: An exchange student from Italy, Julie is Jake's gf and a very nice girl. I hang out with her too, although she speaks poor english. She likes to make fun of me too, but only when her bf is around, and she looks like she kinda regrets it. She likes to gossip a lot with these other European girls, and one time I heard them giggling and mentioning my name. I think she may have a crush on me. Santiago Velasquez: A Latino from Colombia who doesn't fit the Hispanic stereotype at all. Santiago is studious, intelligent, and unbelievably wealthy. He has a quick temper though and is easily angered. He hates having bad grades and gets all twitchy and flinchy if he gets a 95% on a test. He has an unbelievably hot mom, who Jake often mentions, and Santiago gets angry at that disrespect. His near-perfect life is often a source of jealousy, although he is also unbelievably nice, and loves to help others, particularly me. He is a hypochondria. He is very uptight and ancy, sometimes he even wears suits! When angry or startled, he swears in Spanish, then apologizes as if we even knew what he was saying. He talks very fast. Gertrude Wain: The class goth. She is creepy and depressing. Like Jake, she likes other people's miseries, and laughs when I get scared. She still tries to help everyone out though. She dresses scary, too. Mitchell Magyar: Another class clown, Mitchell is a devout Jew, yet despite that he manages to get on EVERYONE'S nerves! He is really annoying!!!!! Santiago dislikes his constant interruption of class, whereas Jake loves it. Who do u think is a real friend? Can u maybe put it like: Jake is a great friends cuz bla bla bla or Santiago is a bad friend because bla bla bla and then u should forget about Julie bla bla bla What do u think? Who is my actual friends and who isn't?

Jake: He is a jerk. Leave him. Forget about him. Julie: I think she was saying something about u to her friends. U should try to talk to her. Her acts of friendship do seem genuine, and the reason she seems pained to make fun of u is probably because she doesn't want to. Its her horrid bf's fault, i think. Santiago: Great kid, don't leave him. He seems a little stressed though, maybe u could help him see there's more to life than books and numbers? Gertrude: Creepy! Try talking to her. U didn't explain her too well, maybe she is friendly maybe she isn't Mitchell: Another Jake. Get away from those two!

Should I get a CELTA, TEFL, or Bridge-IDELT?

Should I get a CELTA, TEFL, or Bridge-IDELT?
I have a Bachelor's degree in Int'l Business, a US passport and citizenship, an excellent understanding of languages, but no formal teaching experience. I would like to teach abroad for a year or two (preferably in Spain, where I have already spent some time, Portugal, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, or Colombia - my ABC's ;), and be able to earn enough to cover my basic cost of living, in addition to making some small payments on student loans. I'm a native English speaker, but I also speak Spanish and am learning Portuguese. :) That said: can you recommend what certification I should get? I want to be able to teach well, but I think a CELTA might be overkill. Is BridgeTEFL a reputable organization (I've already seen the www.teflcoursereview.com site, but that's just one source)? Let me know if you have any personal experience with these types of programs. I have a friend with the same basic credentials (American, bachelor's degree, non-EU passport) who teaches in Spain, so it can be done. It's an interesting point, however, that the best pay is to be found in Asian countries - I'll take that into account. Thanks!
Teaching - 5 Answers

1 :
teaching in those countries isn't super profitable. you want to make those little tudent loans pays be thinking of korea or china, and tefl is fine for anywhwere you go
2 :
The fact that you speak the languages will work in your favor, but the other answerer is correct in that Asian countries pay better. (But the cost of living is also higher: Tokyo is considered the most expensive city in the world to live in.) While you may think that CELTA is overkill, the more respected your qualifications the better the job you can get. I spent 9 months doing an RSA Diploma, although I was a qualified teacher with an MA, and I never had any trouble getting work.
3 :
Keep in mind that to teach in Europe you need a EU passport. CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL and TESL Canada are the best courses in the industry because they require course providers (Many of them colleges and universities) to offer an advanced level of training and include a teaching practice module.
4 :
To get an entry level job in all those countries you'll need a degree and a TEFL Certificate. The degree you already have so that's no problem. As for the TEFL Certificate, any certificate from a reputable school will suffice. You can take it either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option (see http://icalweb.com). I would advise against CELTA at this stage as in my opinion it's for teachers with at least a couple of years experience. It's a very intensive course and without previous knowledge of the subject many students flounder. As for working in Europe, yes a passport from a European country would help a lot and although it can be done without, it is much harder to find work. There's a link below with much more information on this subject.
5 :
I think CELTA would be just right for you - you're obviously fairly smart and hard-working. It's a tough course, but if you prepare for it by doing some pre-course reading, you should be fine. I don't know if you think it's 'overkill' in terms of time or money, but it will be much more widely accepted when job-hunting.

War on Drugs: people are dying because of drugs trade?

War on Drugs: people are dying because of drugs trade?
What's your opinion on the following? My political science professor is pretty much all for it. The current violence going on in Mexico and South America is directly accredited to the street demand of drugs and narcotics in the United States. He wouldn't state his opinion on marijuana, but he did say that particularly the Mexican drug cartels is behind most of the marketshare of the weed sold on the streets in the US. Those same cartels also grow and traffic meth to a certain extent and cocaine. The cocaine itself is grown and processed in mostly Colombia but the cartels down there sometimes work with Mexican groups to get their merchandise into the United States, which has the most demand. The cross-border shootings, kidnappings and murders are accredited to Mexican gangs financed by the drug trade. Many of these kidnappings are also related to human trafficking- another income source for these gangs. He also mentioned he had a student from middle school who was kidnapped in 2005, and hasn't been heard from since. One of these gangs known as Los Zetas is for lack of a better term a paramilitary force who are sometimes better equipped than the Mexican government. They're comprised of corrupt and disgruntled Mexican military (a lot of the times corrupt Mexican special forces as well) and operate just across the border from Texas. Their business is warfare, and if you cross the border it is literally a battleground. Even on the US side you hear stories of bombings, high-profile murders and shootings in broad daylight. This group is directly financed by the same Mexican drug cartel trafficking mainly marijuana but crack/cocaine as well. He goes on to say that he doesn't care for people who think drugs should be legal and all. He has his own personal opinion about them and would rather not share it. Moralities aside, in the end people are dying and it's because of the drug trade. Thoughts?

Capital punishment for addicts will end the drug trade. They are the cause of the problem. No addict and there is no profit from drugs for cartels to kill over.

and people are dying from car crashes
3 :
All drugs should be legal. You should be able to get 10 lbs of crack at CVS for $10. If someone wants to kill themselves go ahead. Killing all the drug dealers will just be replaced by other drug dealers and raise the price for drugs. 70% of the money spent in the criminal justice system is spent on drug enforcement. They release violent offenders from prison to make room for drug dealers. Last year in the local paper a man that committed armed robbery received less time than a man convicted of dealing drugs. This is just stupid! The drug laws have hurt society more than the drugs themselves. But drugs will never be legal, look how much money the government makes on them. There is some evidence that the government is importing it. The anti drug people believe that anyone that says drugs should be legal is a dope head. I'm not. Never have been. I don't like taking prescription drugs.
4 :
There would be less crime if we had free flowing marijuana, meth and xtasy? Only a druggie would buy that line.
5 :
prohibition didn't work for alcohol and it doesn't seem to be working for drugs. i had always thought that the Hippocratic oath was to do no harm. however pills have been prescribed that have done harm. did the doctors that prescribed them resign in shame? legalize them all and then spend some of the drug war budget on intelligent information.

I want to study one year in USA?

I want to study one year in USA?
Hi... I'm from Colombia, I live in Bogotá. I'm 20 years old and I will graduate on Graphic Design this year. I would love to go to US for a year, after I finish my career in september to study english and to have a new experience for my life living in a huge multicultural country like US, I'd love to travel around the country and meet new people and places... I want to get as much as I can from this trip to grow up in every aspect of my life and of course get a perfect english... I don't have too much money to make this trip, but I want to make it so badly, so I'd like to know.... --->Which city do you recommend to study with affordable costs (education, transportation, food...)? --->Is there a posibility for me to live with a host family to make it cheaper? --->How much money do I need to live for year in the US? ---> Do I need to apply right now for a Student Visa? Which things do I need to apply for it? Any information/answer you have about my questions or if you are/were on my situation and found something helpful, it means a lot to me if you share it here! THANKS!!!

You won't last. Settle for a country with no taxes or you're doomed. Try Europe or somewhere in the Middle East.
2 :
You can't apply for a student visa until you've been accepted to a school. They'll give you all the documents you need and information about other things you'll need to provide. For cheap living you'll need to look for a small town - avoid pretty much every major city and anything on the coasts. A host family may be a possibility but it will depend on the program. Depending on the school you attend, plan on about $30-50,000USD for a year - financial aid is very difficult for international students to get. Your first step is to start researching study programs. After that you'll be able to figure out the finances and other requirements.
3 :
Hi there...What type of courses are you looking for? English courses? certificate programs? It sounded like you're looking for something short term. Therefore, I would assume you're looking for English or ESL courses. Such programs allow foreign students to gain cross-cultural experience while improving their English in the United States. They provide fun-learning experience as students can meet people from around the world and yet learning the local culture. --->Which city do you recommend to study with affordable costs (education, transportation, food...)? Florida is one of the cheapest cities with low living standard in America plus the weather is ideal for international students. Also, many other sub-urbans could be a good choice for lower expenses area to live in. --->Is there a posibility for me to live with a host family to make it cheaper? Yes, you can easily apply to an English or ESL programs with host family placement. There are a few good reasons to live with a host family: 1. They include meals and utilities. Usually, 2 meals a day. You only have to pay a fixed fee, which with an average of $200 to $280 a week. 2. They provide total immersion to the local culture to gain cross-cultural experience 3. They provide more chances to improve your English as you can practice your English in the daily basis --->How much money do I need to live for year in the US? The estimated expenses for a month for living in a city is about $1000 to $1500. So, you can expect to spend a little less in sub-urban or smaller cities. ---> Do I need to apply right now for a Student Visa? Which things do I need to apply for it? Yes, you will need a student visa to live off a year in the country. Before applying for student visa, you will need to be accepted by a school. Then, you will receive a form I-20 from the school and you will used it for visa application. If you need further assistance, check out www.admissionsbridge.com. They offer courses throughout the United States and can help you to find an affordable course to meet your needs for FREE!

I went to Fordham and I was really happy with my education. The class sizes are small and they give really good financial aid. It is somewhat difficult to get in, the average GPA is about a 3.6.
2 :
I am not an alum or a current student but heard good things about Fordham. Despite its unfortunate initials (FU), it is a catholic university. I go to a Jesuit university in Boston and find the people to be very nice. Like the previous responder said, it's competitive to get in. Take a campus tour and see what it's like. No matter what people here tell you, it's best to see for yourself and to get a sense of the campus "vibe". The first time I visited BC, I knew it was a great place. Good luck!

How do I stop being an overachiever?

How do I stop being an overachiever?
Hi I am Juan Lopez my family moved here from Colombia years ago. My parents are those super strict Hispanics, and I realized what kind of an opportunity we have here so I study hard, but I study too hard. I realized I like the way I am but it isn't healthy. Here i9s what I want to change: Firstly, I have to get Straight A's. My parents demand that I get a 95% or higher on everything on my report card, but I have set my own standards by setting the limit to 100% or higher. I cry if I get 98's or 99's, I just hate them! Also, for some reason, when i was trying to find what job to have in the future, I thought I had to make a $200,000 salary. My father makes more than half a million, so now that's had kind of a negative effect on me because I rejected some jobs for having a "low" salary, like $100,000. Yes, i know that's not low, I don't know why I did that. It was weird. I like stress. I also do extra hw and I'm in all AP classes. I have all 100's in my report card, some 101's (Thanks, extra credit!) and am student body president. I never go to parties and to tell you the truth I'm not interested in them. I am 16 and disgusted by drugs and alcohol, and I want to wait until AFTER MARRIAGE to have sex. I almost never go to parties, i go to bed at around 9:00 every day on my own wishes, and I LOVE to wake up early. I feel so weird. What should I do? Anything I can change that won't make e a loser? My parents give me an allowance every week, but if I didn't get a 100% or higher on a test/quiz, I reject them and say I don't deserve it. I even hate myself for being young and foolish and I want to grow up so badly. My mother says too much stress isn't good, my father likes my attitude though, but my mother says that there's no need to kill myself over an A. What should I do? Is it just because I'm Hispanic so I set those limits or could it be my personality or what? Help me change this please.

i'm going to sound like a bit of a hippy, but go on a long walk, go and find a bit of grass to sit on and watch the sunset, listen to some music, go and do something that you're scared of, don't carry on wishing you were older but take notice of the world around you, go travelling when you get the opportunity and don' take any schoolbooks or whatever else; carry on being clever and getting A's, but just realise there are more important things, try and find some sort of residential/camp thing where you are shut of from your normal life an dhave no choice but to pay attention to the world, and also read Homo Faber by Max Frisch and realise that you might wreck your life if you're not careful but equally you might be fine if you just learn to realise that, yes it's a cliche, money won't make you happy however it seems. Also it seems that you've got this attitude from your dad and you may be doing this as much for him as for you, you're scared you won't live up to him and he'll be disappointed, well I don't know quite what to say about that; but you clearly are a multi-tasker so i think you can manage to impress him with your grades, your job, everythung like that, whilst still knowing that that's not everything, and just go and sit quietly outside sometimes and imagine.
3 :
u dont need to change.honestly people would give so much to be u.u arent a loser, sex is meant for after marriage and u are doing the right thing.u strive for the best and that is a good thing.being really smart can irritate some of your classmates but there are times they would give absolutely anything to be u.all u need to is to socialize a little more but never let your guard down.people like u are what we need in this world to make it a better place and truly u are gifted.dont let what people say get to you.

your grades are nice, but you really need to bring up your act score. good luck!
2 :
importance of class rank depends a bit on what high school you attend and whether you take the hard classes or all easy ones many colleges admit about 90% of applicants & only a few are real selective I think UC Berkeley might be a reach for you, but you can give it a shot consider doing one of those ACT prep classes, as they have good hints and practice
3 :
Your GPA and class rank are good, but you should get your ACT scores up. I think you should be able to get into Syracuse, but UC Berkely and Columbia University would definitely be reaches. Good luck!
4 :
syracuse yes, spelman perhaps if you're african american. but colombia and berkely probably no. your grades/class rank isfantastic, but the act needs work. your activities are solid, but not unique. try to win some awards, get a leadership position. show passion and dedication through your essay. best of luck!

What college is right for me? ?

What college is right for me? ?
I am currently a senior at a blue ribbon high school in Mass. My grade point average currently is a 96. I have traveled to Africa, China, India, Thailand, and Brazil for service projects. I am currently an Eagle Scout. I have taken 5 AP courses throughout my high school years and have only taken 1 honors class. I take flying lessons on the weekends and work for the special olympics. I teach children Italian with special needs. I currently have an internship as a sports writer with Sports Illustrated. This summer I wil be attending Brown University for a marine biologist Research lab this summer. I have taken the ACT twice. My first score was a 21 and my second score was a 27. I feel like I am a well rounded student. I currently have my Uncle who is a professor at Iowa checking my college essays and my Research papers. My grades are all in the 90's right now. I have played varsity soccer for my school four years in a row. I was the only starting freshman ever to make varsity. I am interested in Brown University, Colombia, Rutgers, University of Miami, Harvard University, and lastly Princeton University. I would appreciate if you can give me some advice and ideas about these schools. I am thinking of applying early to Princeton! Thank you for your support!

Everything else sounds amazing (maybe take a few more APs), but what happened on the ACT? The full score is 36, so you basically got 75%. Colleges will probably ask questions about that when they see your application. Keep in mind, Princeton's early program in particular is *extremely* self-selective - only the elite among Princeton's already very selective applicant pool apply early. Maybe try taking the standarized tests again - if you get above a 34 on the ACT, then I'd say you're in as good of a shape applying to Princeton and Harvard as anyone can get. Good luck. ps - Your Sports Illustrated internship suggests an interest in journalism. Have you considered Northwestern?
2 :
How should we know? You sound like Ivy League material, but why University of Miami? I'd say it depends on what you want to do with your life, if you have a clue, and which school has the most interesting and comprehensive program for that discipline. For example, I probably wouldn't go to the University of Nebraska if I was interested in marine biology, and I wouldn't go to a liberal arts college if I was interested in engineering. PS: Your ACT scores are still low for Ivy League, though. Perhaps your SATs are better? PPS: Do your own papers, and stop asking your uncle to check your work.
3 :
Wooooooow! That is one one impressive list! As far as im concerned, you'll probrably end up getting acceptance letters from ALL of those universities. But selecting one depends on what you want to major on. You need to make sure those universities offer the majors that you are interested in. Also consider location. Maybe you want to go somewhere sunny or maybe not. Somewhere far or near from home? I'd wish you good luck but I don't think you'll need it!

How to get a visa to Mexico?

How to get a visa to Mexico?
My friend and I want to make a trip to Mexico. I'm a Mexican citizen, so I don't require any documents other than my passport to enter the country. My friend is a citizen of Colombia. We both live in Austin, TX, which means our country of exit will be USA. Anyhow, my Friend only has a student visa to stay here in the USA has he goes to college. Like I said, we both want to go to Mexico over the weekend. Does anyone know how hard it is for a Colombians citizen to get a visa to enter Mexico? About how much does it cost? How long it takes to get? How long does the visa last? Any helpful information would be great, thanks!! 10 points for best answer within the hour. Thanks! Thanks for the reply. Basically, we're both pilots, and we're planning on flying across the border to possibly Tampico or Puerto Vallarta.

You haven`t been overly specific as to your destinations. If you are both going beyond the border zone your Colombian friend will need an official Visa. Sounds like you just want to cross the border and have a little fun in a border town, if that is the case you do Not need much to go to Mexico but you both had better have all the paperwork to re enter the usa You will both need your passports and your friend will need his/her US visa to return without a lot of grief.
2 :

How can I get my gay boyfriend back after all I've done!?

How can I get my gay boyfriend back after all I've done!?
Here is my story, I am a white guy, 25 years old from LA, I am gay and since I am rather a good looking guy temptation was always there and it was just so easy to cheat.... The problem is that I was in a relationship with this foreign exchange student from Columbia, this guy left everything for me, he didn't even return to his country just so he could stay with me..... he loved me a lot and I took him for granted, yes I loved him but I just couldn't stop partying and cheating with other guys. He used to suffer a lot because he wanted something serious, something stable, not the typical gay relationship where promiscuity is the norm! I became infected with HPV (genital warts) from this surfer dude I was dating while in the relationship with my boyfriend and infected my boyfriend..... this was the drop that filled the cup, he sent me to hell and very heart broken went back to columbia, he promised to never come back to the states because he wanted to stay away from me. at the time, I was like whatever..... two years have passed and honestly I CAN NOT... I repeat, I CAN NOT forget him... I think about him everyday and I wonder what he's doing, or where he is now... I eventually found him on facebook and created a fake profile so I could see his pictures and be on his friend's list, when I saw his pic I felt like I would die without him, honestly I don't give a damn about this useless dudes around here..... this columbian dude made feel something I never felt... the emotions, the deep feelings, the amazing moments he gave me I can not get from any one else time have passed and he is now in colombia, apparently happy I had the courage to tell him that I am that fake profile who added him and I can not forget him, when I was telling him this I broke up in tears and he told me it's all forgotten and in the past, he told me I am a bit late and he suffered a lot, however he had no grudges against me, but the whole gay promiscuous relationship is just not him..... I told him I am not doing it anymore I was dumb and didn't know what I had until I lost it and his reply was that he feels honored but honestly he rather put all this in the past and move on in life as he doesn't have any more feelings for me after two years of crying. I feel like I lost the best thing I had! I keep meeting guys but they suck, they have no soul, no spice, they lack the passion he had, the connection I had with him. Any tips on how to get him back? should I just forget about him? I am becoming obsessed with him.

In my opinion, you should leave him alone. Wish him well, stay in touch with him online only, tell him "happy birthday" when its his birthday, etc, but other than that, leave him alone. Your obsession sounds like it is coming from a narcissistic place - wanting what you know you cannot have. You should probably talk to a professional about why you want him so much. There are lots of other guys here in the states who want stable monogamous relationships, but you have yourself convinced that there are not.
2 :
Each time you feel that, grab a hammer and hit your bells. Eventually, that will help you Are you going to write that novel ?
3 :
guy, you might as well suck it up, learn from your mistake, and move on..there is no way that he is going to open up that womb again.we all make mistakes in life, and think we don;t end up paying, even thought he forgave you, and he is a real man to do that, he moved on. remember the good times, and what he stood for, and try to lift yourself up to that level in the next relationship//that one has expired! sorry to say..it will make you a better person..let the guy live his life.you owe him that much
4 :
Well, emm, I was raised in colombia, and where we come from things like that would get you killed or at least in the hospital. I think that you completly blew it, and just be friends with him, because you already hurt him too much and you just can't fix it by loving him. What's done is done, move on and leave him alone
5 :
Well, it is very bad what you did.. In your case, it's like you never knew what you had until you lost it. It's kinda tricky, but if you really want him back maybe you should keep on telling him how much you miss him. Be completely sure that the whole promiscuous thing is over.. If you get back with him and start sleeping around again, you will probably be out of chances. Be sure, tell him that you're done and that you only want him. Ask him if he still has feelings for you. Express your feelings for him.. Maybe you're lucky. But a thing like that is very hard to get over. Perhaps he hasn't forgotten it completely yet. Cheating is bad.. But you could still try.
6 :
please forget that guy he's a she and that you should never forget . Forget and cut that feeling lest you fall on the wrong lane. We do not curse him we just let him go... the way he wanted to be ... put that unnecessary feeling now . Stand up and be as a woman as you are that deserved a man... a man.... like.... Me. uhum...pls.
7 :
Lovely diatribe, and a nice work of fiction. In your other posts, you claim to be 32 years old, and another you stated that you have lived with a women for 2 and a half years. Nice try....
8 :
Time to let go and move on with your life. You had your chance with him and blew it. He has told you that he has moved on and made a life for himself, so get over him. As the saying goes you don't know what you got til it's gone.
9 :
If the facts you related are real then long story short: No. Let go. Cherish the memory and move along. I have similar tales in my life and I've learned that once he leaves its over. He might still be friendly but never companion again.
10 :
OK well. I agree with what your ex said and did. You knew he was suffering and wouldn't change your ways then and it pushed him over the edge. Now, you must face the consequence and move on because quite truthfully it doesn't sound like he's coming back. Two years to run after someone is enough time for them to move on and become happy again. You're not getting him back because of what YOU did and how you wouldn't do what (in my opinion) is an important role in relationships: sacrifice. Learn from your mistakes and move on, he did with you.
11 :
People never learn until they actually experience something. Just treat this as a life lesson to prevent the same thing from happening in the future. In times, you'll meet someone else who will make you feel special all over again; and when that happens, you already know what to do, not like the first one. As he said, it was the past, let it go, move on. If he found the courage to get through it when he was more hurt than you, then you can too.
12 :
you suck at telling jokes im just kidding, i really just don't know what say but feel like i really should say SOMETHING
13 :
You payed him wrong... You not only cheated on him but gave him warts, thank the good lord it wasn't something worse. You should take time off and think about what you want in life. Living a promiscuous unsafe lifestyle or having a normal happy life with someone you love.
14 :
Yeah. You should probably move on. First of all, you cannot make the person that have no feelings for you to love you again. Second of all, your obsession with him only is going to discourage him further away from you. Third of all, you are too late. Two years after...I mean, gosh. Should have thought about it earlier. ANyway, if you really want him, ask him once more for the last time. IF he doesn't show any interest, forget about making plans again and drop it. However, you still can be friends with him if you want.
15 :
It sounds like you are deeply in love with him, and he is not in love with you, anymore. It might sound crazy, but you have got to talk to him one last time before completely cut off the relationship. Why don't you ask him to web chat with you, or better yet, take a trip to Columbia. Then you can tell him your feeling, but it must not be all about what YOU need; what YOU want. It must be about how he feels about you. If he still have feeling about you, then ask him if he would willing to give you one more try. If he doesn't, then you must move on. It will hard, cold, lonely, and sad. Tears will always fall when the thought of him come up. But that's life. Do know that a soul mate is very hard to find, but a boyfriend is a dime a dozen. But who knows, hopefully he will give you one more try.

I'm confused about my future...?...?

I'm confused about my future...?...?
I'm an Indian 10th grade student. I live in Dubai. My personal choice for my future is to be a psychiatrist but my dad wants me to go for finance. There is a lot of scope in that line for jobs, agreed. But I'm not interested. What should I do about that? Also, my dad, mom and I have a PR of Canada but I have a 5 month old sister who isn't getting. If I have to continue my education in Canada, I want to go with my entire family. But then, even if I do get to Canada, I will have to repeat a year due to my age. I just turned 14 last Sunday. Even being in Canada, I need to know some good colleges and universities. I was thinking University of British Colombia but the fact remains that these places are quite expensive and I don't want to financially strain my parents. (We come from a middle-class Indian family). So if I plan to continue my education in India, there is lots of competition. I won't be able to get in on merits because even though I am a topper here, there are people much more talented than me in India. So dad will have to bribe. I also don't want to go to private college because i) They take a lot of "official donations" and ii) I'm not even confident about the quality of education or the value of the degree. I don't know what to do and my board exams are in March, 2012. Help, fast! Thanks.

If you don't do what you're interested in, you won't be any good at it. UBC is a good college. Bribery is despicable.

Hello everyone. I quit smoking marijuana a little over two months ago and have not picked up a pipe since. However, I left the drug behind out of pure circumstance. My life was not going well. I had just gotten out of a terrible relationship where my self-esteem was left hanging by a string, and I had ultimately been used under my nose by a rotten girl for around 10 months. My aunt presented me with the opportunity to live in Bogota, Colombia with my family to get away from things until January 2010. I had taken more than a year away from my studies, which previously were at ASU, and I needed to get back on track. I took advantage of the opportunity and I was on a plane the next week. I smoked a joint of Pineapple Kush the night before the flight. Until two months ago, I was an every day pot smoker. Actually, until two months ago, I was a pot dealer/occasionally other stuff dealer. Everyone I know and all of my friends are either drug dealers, or drug users. I'm talking about a very large circle of friends that I ended up becoming very popular with because... well... I was their hookup and smoke-bro most of the time. Even when I wasn't slanging buds, I was smoking chronic every day for pretty much free, shrooming on weekends sometimes, and drinking in excess at times. To be perfectly honest, I really liked drugs. I've dropped acid around 6 or seven times and dropped extacy various times as well. I've been totally sober here in Bogota for a little over two months, and I'm seeing my life completely differently. Before I left, I purchased a book called The Success Principles, by Jack Canfield in the wake of my turbulent relationship's end. I've read it three times through now and it has really shown me that I am worth more than the life I previously created for myself, and that it is my personal obligation to avoid the things in my life that are going to take me away from success, health and general well-being. The Dilemma. My mom called the other night and told me she would like me to start squaring away the student loans and financial aid paperwork so that I could start in the august semester. Since I got here, I've somewhat communicated with my old circle of friends through AIM and MSN. I've gotten pictures and videos from them saying "What's up man! We miss you bro! Here's to you dog! *toke* *toke* *bong rip*" I'm not saying I don't appreciate it, but I left the US to get away from that and find what was right for me, and now I'm going back early and I have doubts. My doubts are: "Am I going right back to where I came from"? "Will all this be for nothing"? Sometimes, I sit at night and think "I would give anything to get high off some bomb chronic right now. Even a few vicodin and a few beers would do the trick". I want to be sure that I have the stength to say "I'm sorry I just can't do this anymore, I have to focus on school and my degree" before I return. I just don't know if I have it yet. Honestly, I'm worried. I know what some of these answers are going to look like, and I know I'm going to be told that I have to detatch myself from the negative influences I had before, and I'm trying hard to accept that, although it's happening slowly. I know that if I had never gone out into that field with my best friend when I was 18 and smoked those two grams of chronic he got for the first time, I would be in a totally different place today. I might have my degree already or have landed a solid job with some financial firm like I always wanted. I am hoping someone out there has had a somewhat similar experience so that I don't have to invent a wheel here. I hope someone can give me some advice on what I can do to lose my urge to smoke and be ready to take on life when I get back to the States. I know this story might be a little out of order and filled with holes, but I appreciate anyone who answers for trying to help out. Edit: I just wanted to add that I'm not against the use of marijuana, but it has caused it's problems in my life (socially more than anything) and lead to other things for me. I know there are people out there who successfully self-medicate regularly and have not experienced the same problems. Thank you for your input.

How is gang life in London,England from New York City?

How is gang life in London,England from New York City?
I am from New York City, and your average Puerto Rican American.I lived in New York City all my life, but then Ive did some research about London,England and how 300.000 Americans were moving their, because 1 hundred years ago many people from England moved to the USA,and now Americans are moving to England. Ive been around the worst gangs in American, but some girl who is a student in New York that is from London, told me that gangs in London is worst than the gangs in New York. I'm not saying their are no gangs in London, but it can't be worst than New York, because the whole country has gangs and metric tons of drugs traffic in and out the country everyday from Colombia thru the Mexiccan boarder and on to the streets of America. I would like to move to London,Ive always liked reading about London, but I just can't believe that the ghettos in London are far more worst than American ghettos. Like a true American I don't drink tea,I drink coffee,I only drink tea in the winter.Adios for now

American gangs are more dangerous because of the Gun culture in America.. In England the possession of a firearm is not taken lightly by the law ...The gangs are dangerous but not as bad as American Gangs.. Every day of the week in America a person is shot or murdered by Gangs, you wont see that in England ..It happens but its less likely...

We have had a spate of knife crime over 21 Kids have been killed this year alone. It's bad right now.It is produced from ignorance and fear. This kids need love especially of a father,I was threatened today on the train which is very rare. The kids have gone a bit mad now because they are out of control and just out of school. We all need to play our part somehow to help these kids even if it's saying murder is wrong.I used to be afraid of attack when I moved in last year but once you get to know people it is much better.

What georgia colleges allow illegal aliens to attend?

What georgia colleges allow illegal aliens to attend?
If you are going to answer this question saying go back to your country or make a stupid ignorant response similar than that then please disregard my question because i feel that you can take your opinion and shove it. now my question has to do with my boyfriend who is about to lose his visa because he is about to turn 21 and is getting phased out of his visa. unlike popular belief not all people run across the border. ignorant people seem to believe that every hispanic is a mexican who crossed the border in some illegal fashion. well realistically he moved here in high school and due to his parents applying for residency late he will not be able to recieve his green card because once you turn 21 you are no longer considered part of the family and his dad's visa which he has lived off of for 4 years no longer applies to him. now he wants to go to college and after trying to apply for the student F1 visa he found out that he does not meet the requirements for the visa and is left with no more options. he has nothing left in colombia. his whole family is here in Georgia. so now we have looked into the DREAM act which allows illegal aliens to attend college in the united states. my question is what colleges in georgia allow illegal aliens to attend? are there any that allow them to pay in state tuition? and finally what is the process of doing all of this? thanks for any helpful responses. he cant apply for citizenship...you have to be a resident before you become a citizen..and after receiving your green card you have to wait at least 3 years before you can even apply and take the test to become citizen. his family is still in the process of becoming residents.

If his dad has lived here for 4 years, can't he apply for citizenship via the naturalization process in only 1 more year? The first step after all is to live in the states for 5 years.

Overprotective parents?

Overprotective parents?
Ok. I moved from Colombia to NYC last year to go to college. Everything is going great so far. I met a guy, fell in love and we've been dating for 5 months now. However, my parents (dad) are EXTREMELY overprotective of me. They let me come to NYC but now my dad hates the fact that Im dating a guy just because school should be my first and ONLY priority. What he doesn't understand is that dating this guy is not interfering with my studies whatsoever. If anything it's actually making me improve my grades. My dad doesn't understand this and says he's too old for me (6 year difference, which is the same difference that my dad and mom have between each other) and how he's not worth it or so and he disapproves of my relationship. I told him I am sorry he felt that way but he can't changed the fact that I love this guy. My dad threatened me to take me home with them and continue my studies there, if my grades fall. They are not bad and he just wont think of it in that way. He says I should have A's instead of B's. I was NEVER an A+ student and I will never be, but my dad can't accept that I am not the superstar he wants me to be. I want to not depend on their money but I can't work in the US if I don't get a working visa. What should I do? Should I "run" away from home and stay here in NY, look for a job and forget about them? Or what?

i know how over protective parents are and i think you should just stand up to your dad and tell him that you will never be as perfect as he wants you to be. tell him you love your bf and make him understand that age doesnt matter. if he gets mad what can he do? spank you? put you in time out? you are too old for that kind of stuff.

Can I get into SUNY, NYU, Cornell or any other good universities?

Can I get into SUNY, NYU, Cornell or any other good universities?
I am a polytechnic student and I have a GPA of 2.83, 2.44, 2.56 and 2.6 until now! From Electronics and Communication I plan to Get at least 3.7 this semester. However this will bring my Overall GPA to just 2.89. I will be sending this semester's GPA in the mid Year report. I know I have potential but I just messed up everything with video games and friends. I have about 5 extracurriculars like community service, volunteer work, Literature publication, Music recording and theater. I can even have 3.8 in the final semester. can I get in to any of the universities? Please be specific and give reasons. I want to pursue engineering in Computer Science. Also, I have decent SAT scores. over 2230 in Reasoning and 680 to 730 in 3 SAT-II's. NYU SUNY CORNELL WSU CALTECH NJIT PSU Princeton University of Maryland Colombia Also please suggest some universities that I can get into with the above scores. Something that is better than these..

Are you still in high school or are you wanting to transfer from one college to another? With your GPA, NYU, CalTech, Princeton, Cornell and Columbia are not realistic. Don't know what WSU you're referring to, but it's probably going to be difficult to get into any out-of-state college with those grades. You should be able to get into one of the lower- or middle-tier SUNYs, however. If you're still in high school, your best bet may be to go to community college, be serious about your work, get high marks and then transfer to a four-year college

Do I still have a chance?

Do I still have a chance?
It is my freshman year of high school. The school I go to runs by trimesters. For my first trimester GPA, I got a 3.6 (Three A's and two B's). When I grow up, I would like to become an archaeologist (as well as a college history professor). Because they have really good programs for that, I'd like to go to Brown, Colombia, or UPenn. However, those are really good schools. Do I still have a chance on getting into them if I got a 3.6 last trimester? I'll be able to do better this trimester (maybe a 3.8), but I will still probably get a B in math. I do sports year round and a lot of community service. I'm also involved in the Red Cross club and am planning on doing more clubs next year. I'm the best in my grade at biology (there are only three freshman biology classes, so my teacher teaches them all. She told me that I was her best biology student and have recieved the average test scores), and if I keep it up I should be able to get into AP Chemistry next year. I'm also in the freshman honors math class and if I wasn't, I would definitely be getting A's in math easily. I'll also be able to get into honors english and AP World history next year. I'm just really worried that my GPA for last trimester (and most likely this trimester) may have messed up my chances. Do I still have a chance on getting into those schools, or should I set my sights on less prestigious schools? Is there anything I can start doing now to help me get into those colleges, even with a bad GPA (like extra community service or something?)

It's not as hard as you think to get in a college...try your hardest and take challenging courses. and you're only a freshman
2 :
yeah relax. work hard, have fun, then in senior year apply and see what happens. don't sweat it.
3 :
just relax and chill out. start worrying about gpa's in you junior year. I got a 2.7 and i got into upenn, boston college, tulane, and syracuse
4 :
Since you're only a freshman, you really can't tell if you'd get in or not. Just keep up your grades/activities, and you'll do fine.
