I'm going to Bogota, Colombia in a week. Any advice?
My friend was a foreign exchange student here last year from Colombia and next week I am going to visit her. I have a friend that went there on spring break last year and he said it was fun but he's a guy. Is there anything that I need to worry about? I'm going to be with her and her parents most of the time but I am a white girl going to be around a lot of latinos and I'm going to stick out like a sore thumb! I'm just a worry wart but I just need things to be precautious about and what's safe to do and what's not. Please answer it will be much appreciated! Thanks!

Hell yes. Don't look too American or else you will draw unwanted attention. Like thieves. Columbia is really screwed up right now. Not enough cops, high crime rates. trust me i'm from Venezuela. be careful! Don't go out late at night. I'd be extra careful if you dont know Spanish.

Yeah it is very dangerous there and you seem quite good looking which will attract a lot of attention. If I were you I would stay inside!

Bogota is a relatively safe city. Take the same precautions you would in any other large city (e.g don't go out alone at night, stay in well lit areas, watch for pickpockets). As for sticking out like a sore thumb. There are a lot of tourists in Bogota. You aren't going to the be the only caucasian there. Also, latinos come in every color. You should be fine.

How is the student life at Columbia University when smartest and brightest people from all over the world have to compete with one another? How do students keep up with the school work load ? How much students loans do you need to take to go through Colombia University ?

how do i get the foreign exchanged student to fall for me?
he's from colombia and there's something about him that drives me insane.. we talk, and we're friends.. but i want more than that. i'm also too shy to do anything.. help?!

for film students which one would you prefer. im a high school and want to major in film i would like work with the camera and i wanted to know which one would be perfiered

You need to figure out what aspect of film you think you have a talent for. There are 2 types of film schools, one teaches the "art" side more than the technical side. The other teaches more technical side (the use of camera, editing, etc) but only touches on the art. I went to Emerson College for Film. I mostly studied Film Criticism, Screenwriting and the "art" and "business" side of filmmaking. Although we did use cameras and edited both on a flatbed and on a computer (this was late 90s), the focus was on art. But if you go to a school like Full Sail, they focus on the technical. You do have classes on the art, but that is not the main instruction. Either school allows you to make your own short films. In the end you have to decide if you want to be a cinematographer / editor or a director / writer.

I would like to go visit my forgin exchange student we hosted a few years ago but family and loved ones say its too dangerous to go? but i would like to know more...

I just came back from Colombia Friday. I had no problem but have heard of people having problems. Keep your guard up, try not to look to touristy and just plain be careful. You won't be in Kansas anymore Dorothy.

I have been to Bogota and it is a beautiful and friendly city. Fascinating places to visit, delicious food and most important terrific hospitality from good natured people who are smart and quite simply fun to be around. As with any metropoliton area there are a parts that you may wish to avoid or venture into with vigilance. Ask your friend before you go someplace. It would be a mistake to deny yourself experiencing Colombia. I am not much for cliches but "A ship is safe in port but that is not what ships are for." applies to your question. Don't stay tied alongside the pier.

Bogota is about as safe as any other large city in the developing world. Petty theft is higher risk than say New York. You don't need to worry about kidnapping or violence related to drug trade or their civil war -- all of that happens outside the capital. My wife is Colombian and I've stayed in Bogota for many weeks over the last few years. Great restaurants and nice people. So plan your trip!

Eight million people live in Bogota and while some of them are very unfortunate to be mugged or even killed in the streets (due to some problems which are not exclusive to Colombia but instead happen everywhere), the remaining 99%+ of the population is safe and sound. Is it dangerous to walk by yourself at 11 pm on a neighbourhood (whether it's deemed 'dangerous' or not)? Of course, but it also happens in Chicago, New York (where John Lennon was shot), etc. Is it dangerous to exhibit pricey watches and loads of cash? Sure, but it also happens in Tokyo (where an acquaintance was mugged), Seoul, etc. Are there drunk drivers and accidents caused by them? Indeed, but it also happens in London, Paris (where Ladi Di died), etc.

I'm from Colombia and I'm going to the states next year. I'm going to stay with a host family, but I'm really nervous because some of my friends had have some bad experiences...

Can you find out anything about your host family ahead of time? Do they have a son or daughter who will be in your class? Have they actually asked to have an exchange student living with them, or have they been required to accept one in return for having one of their children study abroad? A cousin of mine was in this last situation when she was an exchange student, and the people who were supposed to be her away-from-home parents mostly ignored her. On the other hand, one of my high school classmates spent a summer in another country and came home talking about the family she had stayed with as if they were her relatives. In any case, won't there be a contact person associated with the agency that's arranging for you to go--someone you can get in touch with in the town where you're going? If you're really unhappy in the host home (and I don't mean just homesick!), you can probably arrange to be moved. An exchange student at my high school one year moved just a couple of months after he started school. But let's assume that the family you'll be staying with is enthusiastic about having you. Just try to adapt to their way of doing things, especially their schedule and whatever rules they have for their own teenagers. In general, don't talk abut the way things are done in Colombia unless someone asks or you need to explain your lack of familiarity with some American practice. Don't be afraid to ask quesions like "Is it OK to do this?" And if people ask what seem to be stupid questions about your country, assume that they're honestly seeking information, unless they're really offensive. (If someone asks about the drug trade in Colombia just tell him, truthfully, I think, that the major drug exported from there is caffeine.) If someone asks you something you don't want to answer, you ca always forget your English until he gives up. If soemone tries to pressure you into doing something you don't want to do or think is wrong and tries to tell you, "Everyone does it here" or "This is the way they do it here," just stand your ground and say something like, "Well, I don't!" Since one reason you'll be here is to learn about American culture, your class schedule will probably include American Literature and American History. You probably won't take Spanish, since you'll be at least as proficient as the teacher, but you may be asked to speak to a Spanish class. Other than that, you'll have some choice about the subjects you take. It would also be a good idea to get involved in a few extra-curricular activities that interest you. Think positively! I think most people you meet will try to make sure you like it here. By the way, your English is excellent.
