How to make my Colombian exchange student more comfortable?
In two months my friend from MedellÃn, Colombia will be living with me and my family for a few months. Any tips about how to make her more comfortable would be greatly appreciated, especially if they are specific to her culture. Thanks :) En dos meses mi compañera de intercambio llegará de MedellÃn, Colombia a vivirá con mi familia y yo. Algunos ideas sobre cómo hacer que ella se sienta más cómodo en nuestra casa que será muy apreciada, especialmente si estos son especÃfica a su cultura. Gracias :)

their culture is christian based so i don't think the cultures are too different. they like to dance, have fun, tho they are a little proud, best not to challenge them too much. in two months it goes fast, feed him american, and if you go to a burger place he'll tell you that corral in colombia is better and it is. so give him good coffee and he likes scrambled eggs, with chopped tomatoes and green onions. for breakfast.

Foreign student wants to enter University in U.S?
I have a legal work permit and Social security number. I'm 28 years old and I live in Florida USA. I would like to enter any University in Miami. I speak English very well. In 2003 I studied 2 semesters of Modern Languages and Pedagogy in a very important university of Colombia (South America). I have never done the TOEFL or SAT and neither have I validated high school (in case I need to). Where exactly should I do begin??? a step by step plan would be perfect. thanks in advance guys. I'm from LATIN AMERICA (just in case) it seems an ignorant thought I was Islamic or Muslim .

Quotas are being readjusted radically if you're from any Islamic country so don't hold your breath, and rightfully so. The Al Arian scandal is still fresh in the minds of many in Florida and the USA. So sorry to inform you but Muslims are screened and re-screened and investigated and screened again and rightfully so.

For correct advise please consult the admissions office of your choice. In general here are some steps you should follow. 1. Identify the school you wish to attend. 2. Consider visiting the school before you apply, as it will have a definite impact on your studies. 3. Application - Fill out an application for either undergraduate or graduate studies. Because you are not an American citizen you may have to apply as an international student. For correct paperwork please consult the admissions office. 4. Financial Aid - Fill out any necessary paperwork with the financial aid office. 5. You indicate that you attended college in Colombia. It is necessary to provide a transcript of which classes you took. This may impact which classes you have to take to graduate.

I'm 18, living in the UK although originally foreign. I have some teaching experience doing one-to-one classes of English, Spanish and Slovak to foreigners. I want to travel in summer or in a gap year before starting university and teach English. I'm looking for a TEFL course that would enable me to do it. Please note, I have no degree, I haven't started university yet. I would be thinking about going to Spain / South America (Peru / Chile / Colombia) / Portugal / Germany / Switzerland / Slovakia. Would I be able to get a summer or gap year job in these countries if I do a 100-hour online TEFL course? Which course do u suggest that I do? Thanks.

It's very hard to get work without a degree as a degree + tefl cert are the usual basic requirements. Likewise, a summer job is usually hard to find as the vacancies are few and they're often filled by teachers who have been laid off for the summer from their school. If you want to take a gap year off teaching English there are possibilities but please be very careful about who you go with as there are lots of scam artists out there when it comes to volunteering. If you want to teach without a degree then there are a few possibilities. You could go to: * China - the demand here is so great they often overlook the need for a degree. * Indonesia * Ecuador * Mongolia * Czech republic (although you will need a passport from an EU member state to teach here) But you will most likely have to be in the country yourself to get work. Your best bet if you want TEFL as a career is to get your degree. And then a TEFL certificate. Almost any decent cert will be fine and can be taken either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option (see http://icalweb.com).

College student with business major, is this a bad idea?
College student with business major, is this a bad idea?
I am currently a freshman in college. My major will be economics + business and finance. when i graduate If i don't get a job here, do you think it's a bad idea to move to move to another country, such as Colombia and try to get a job there? i am fluent in both english and spanish. I would like to become (hopefully) some sort of executive (CEO, COO, ect.) Can i get paid more since i graduated from an american university? by the way- i choose Colombia because a. I have family there and b. beautiful women :-P

Yes. Everyone and their brother has a business degree, and, meanwhile, it doesnt teach you much. Minor in business and economics. Major in English (critical thinking) or language (useful skill) or something you are passionate about (makes you unique)

Your original choices are fine, and if you have Colombian connections it might be fun to move there and work for awhile. If you can't find a job you want to do here, then by all means look abroad, it may even be beneficial since you would have both the finance experience and international business experience (depends on the type of firm you work for in Colombia). If you want to become an executive officer of some sort, getting an MBA from a top school will be beneficial, and the work experience abroad would make you a very attractive candidate to many business schools. Good luck!

Finance or Economics would be good majors and an mba would be a plus but usually employers want to see work experience, not just an MBA. Of course familiarity with Colombia, speaking the langauage and having connections would help!

I am a Junior in high school and hope to attend Colombia University. My freshman year I had mostly A's with a B and a C. Sophomore year I had all A's except for B's in math and science the first semester and C's in the those two subjects the second semester. Although I didn't do well in those subjects I know I can get excellent recommendations from those teachers. For my freshman and sophomore year I attended a small nontraditional and rigorous boarding school where I participated in two seasons of soccer, two seasons of the equestrian program, one season of lacrosse, and one season of cross country. The boarding school had no staff aside from the teachers so the students did all the work including farming, cooking, and cleaning. I have not taken the SAT yet, I assume I will do well even in math and science, and particularly in writing. This year I am taking AP English, history, and Environmental Science, and Gate (honors) pre-calculus, video production, and my third year of Spanish at our community college. My electives from previous years include Gender Studies, Representational Drawing, Creative Writing, Da Vinci Studies, Film Studies, Fundamentals in Art, and Web design. I plan to take at least 4 more writing and media related electives at the community college. I was freshman class vice president and wrote for the school's news paper for a semester. I play guitar and Piano. I plan to do as many hours of community service this year as possible and intern with a local news paper or media related business. By the time I graduate I will have taken (as well as the electives mentioned above) Honors Algebra 1, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus: English 9,10, AP English 11,12; World History, AP US history, AP Economics; Natural Science, Chemisry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics; and 4 years of Spanish. I plan on applying to Colombia but I realize I am lacking in the grade and extracurricular department. Any suggestions to help improve my application? I am not sure if it will help but I am sure I can get excellent recommendations from the teachers at my boarding school.

You should start by learning how to spell Columbia (unless you are referring to a university in the South American country, in which case I retract my statement). Furthermore, there is no science section on the SAT. But seriously, just make sure you get A's all of junior year (colleges look for improvement over the high school years), 5's on all your AP's, ace the SATs and try to get recommendations from junior year teachers.

Is city college of New York a smart college?
i know in NYC the best college is probably Yale or NYU or colombia but what is CUNY city college's status in NY? what kinds of students go there? how is the quality of education?
