Planning an exchange semester to Hong Kong at CUHK?

Planning an exchange semester to Hong Kong at CUHK?
I am from Colombia and if everything goes ok, I will be in Hong Kong making an exchange semester starting next january. Any advices to get in touch with local students? average cost of living? any suggestions?

Are you living in the dorm or outside. There's really no average per se in HK. A guy making HK$100,000 a month surely eats and dress differently from a guy that makes HK$10,000. HK can be quite expensive, however unlike most rich places which do not have a market for low incomes, HK has the cheapest Macdonald's in the whole world. A Mac meal can cost as low as under HK$30. A bowl of wonton noodle can be as low as HK$15, a fried rice can be only HK$20. If you rent an apt in a remote New Territories village, the rent can be as low as HK$2,500 - 3,000 a month. One litre of paper box milk is around HK$8. A loaf of white bread is around HK$10. So if you dont eat out and do only widow shoppings you can really save a lot of money.
2 :
Well, rent would be quite expensive because it's a metropolitan area but rates for food, clothing, electricity are really good and it balances out somewhat. Getting in touch with students shouldn't be hard either, 'cause it's a city!

Why doesn't y/a honor free speech in the way that Colombia U does?!?

Why doesn't y/a honor free speech in the way that Colombia U does?!?
I'm sure they don't expell their students for expressing strong viewpoints! Are institutes of higher learning not businesses as well?

YA is a private business.
2 :
I have no respect for Columbia Univ...
3 :
Columbia doesnt honor free speech or they would allow military recruiters on their campus, which they dont.
4 :
Yahoo is a business, not the US government. The Constitution only protects a citizens free speech from governmental interference. Please read the Constitution for more details. The point is that a business (SOME of which are institutions of higher learning) have the ability to decide what speech they will allow and what they won't. This means they still do not support free speech, as free speech means it cannot be impaired.
5 :
Yet another person who doesn't understand what "free speech" means
6 :
Y!A is controlled mainly by other posters reporting abuse. I am not sure how it works (i.e., how many reported abuses for a violation or how many violations to have your account deleted). Columbia doesn't honor free speech for conservative speakers such as the minutemen. The students attacked him physically. So much for free speech.
7 :
Privately owned businesses aren't required to supply a public soapbox.
8 :
Columbia U doesn't honor free speech or they would allow any party to speak and also allow Military to speak.
9 :
Oi... Columbia is handled just like Yahoo. Each has its own free speech rights that cannot be taken away. The individuals within have free speech rights, but those do not apply when on property not owned by themselves or publically. You cant go spout off about how horrible you think Jews are in the mall, but you can do it on your front lawn. They can remove you from the mall just like they can remove you from Yahoo or from a University. The best part of this is that when the situation was reversed a few years ago and liberal professors were fired from a conservative school for what they said, conservatives kept saying that the school's free speech rights gave them the ability to do it. In both cases I supported the schools. Dont be a hypocrite, form a belief and stick to it based on the belief, not based on how it helps or hinders your own agenda.
10 :
About 50 years the liberals ( at that time the communists and socialist in RUSSIA, still existed) made the decision that to gain control of the USA, the best way was to infiltrate the educational system, and "indoctrinate the young" at every opportunity !!! The liberals at that time made concerted efforts and gained control of virtually all of the PUBLIC education system. Have you noticed whenever the subject of 'school vouchers' comes up, it is the 1. Liberal Politicians, 2. The teachers / University Professors who start screaming, belittling, downgrading the private schools??? FREE SPEECH is protected by the liberals, FOR THE LIBERALS and THEY ARE THE BIGGEST ABUSERS OF WITHHOLDING THAT RIGHT FROM ANY ONE WHO IS IN DISAGREEMENT WITH THEIR PHILOSOPHY !!! Columbia is but a snow flake atop a huge iceberg.

Is learning russian a good career move for a mechanical engineering student?

Is learning russian a good career move for a mechanical engineering student?
I've already learned German and spent a year in Munich, so my proficiency in German is near fluent. I have 2 years left until I'm done with my master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, and i was thinking of taking Russian. From the way I see it, Russia must be a country of good engineers because they were the only country to ever rival the USA with technology. Also, the Mir Space Station seemed like it was in space forever, so it must have been well designed. And since the Colombia disaster, Russia is the only country in the world with a really solid space program. These are my reasons to learn Russian, but my opinions may be flawed, please give me your input about the Russian language. Thanks!

The USSR used to rival American technology, but Russia's economy and budget for such things is much smaller now. The USSR, however, was not the only country to rival the US in terms of technology. France's aeronautics and fledgling space programs have decent technology; they just don't have the budget for a scale like the US. Bottom line: learning Russian could be cool and may provide interesting opportunities down the line, but I doubt it will make you a better mechanical engineer.

My teachers are making me tutor a Spanish speaking student?

My teachers are making me tutor a Spanish speaking student?
Hi I'm 17 and a junior in high school in a suburban high school. Recently a girl from Colombia arrived to our school and she spoke very little English. Since I speak Spanish in my home, the teachers asked if I would kinda help her out with getting by and I said ok. She is working with an English as second language teacher, but I can tell this lady isn't very experienced, so the girl is learning slowly. The thing that's been bugging me the past few weeks is that this girl is pretty badly behaved. I tell her what the assignments are and she takes them home since her mom and stepdad speak English. Recently one of her teachers told me that she has not turned in any of her assignments and asked me if she does them. I'm also having a hard time helping this girl in class, when I have to finish my own work. How do I tell the teachers that if I haven't finished my own work, I can't really help her. Don't they have the responsibility of bringing in an appropriate ESL tutor?

As to the school bringing in another ESL tutor; depends on available funds. As to her inappropriate behavior. You can't make her do her work. Let the teachers know that. Make sure they know you are making the assignments clear to her, and the rest is up to her, NOT you. Let them know you cannot teach what you have not learned yet yourself and that this is hindering your learning and probably that of the other girl. Lastly, the school does need to contact her parents and talk to them about the missing assignments. The parents do have quite a bit of responsibility here.

how do you get an F-1 student visa? about to graduate in june...?

how do you get an F-1 student visa? about to graduate in june...?
i was forced to come to the U.S. when i was 7, i am currently 17, i have no legal residency or anything, but i really want to go to college here in New Jersey, I've already been accepted to a private college here in NJ, I really like this college a lot. I am very determined and am willing to do anything in order to start college here in NJ this fall semester. What should i do, my mom, brother and I currently reside here, but my dad is in Colombia, what should i do in order to get an F-1 visa? and make the process faster? or what should i do, because with out federal grants( which i can't apply for because of my current immigration status), what should i do?

Are you currently in the U.S. as an undocumented alien? The best thing for you to do is acquire a reputable immigration attorney to start the paperwork to apply for permanent resident status. Most schools will allow you to register if you have begun the permanent resident status. Keep this in mind, some schools are strict in terms of undocumented aliens studying at their institution. They are not necessarily in the habit of reporting undocumented aliens, however if Immigration finds out that this institution allowed an undocumented alien to attend their school, their ability to grant I-20's (a Certificate of Eligibility issued by schools for students to apply for an F-1 visa) may be in jeopardy. It is not encouraged for schools to permit undocumented aliens to attend their institution without first verifying that the student is either in the process of converting to permanent resident status or here in the U.S. for political asylum purposes. For more information on obtaining an F-1 (Student visa), visit the following link: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1268.html#apply Best wishes!

You are an illegal alien in this country. Your only bet is to go back to your own country and apply to come back here legally. Even by doing it that way, you will not qualify for any government assistance in your education. No quick way in doing this. There are steps to take in the process. Being accepted by a private college is fine, but you have to pay for it on your own.

what chances do i have of obtaining a student visa?

what chances do i have of obtaining a student visa?
i was born i ncolombia south america am im also a colombian citizen, ive lived 8 years in the us ilegally on a tourit visa. i have now received an I-20 from a school in the U.S and plan to go for my visa apointment soon im 19 years old and have now been living back here in colombia for 2 years. im really worried that the us consulate will deny my visa because i dont have any ties to my home country and maybe because i lived ilegally in the us even though i was under my parents control since i was really young....please help ... thank u i left voluntarily when i was 17

The possibility of it being denied is very high, I'm sorry to say. However, it's not an absolute - it's going to be up to the interviewer. Just try to be at your best, and let them know you are trying to do the right thing.
2 :
you need to apply for a f-1 visa, that comes with a i-94, also makes you eligable for a social security card and your school will provide you with i-20. do you have a family menbers here leagally in the united states? if yes i would have them pettion for your F-1 visa, " student visa" i wouldn't worry to much about it, as long as you haven't been getting in trouble i'm sure they will grant you the status.
3 :
Please ignore Nikki if you haven't already. You need to apply for a f-1 visa, true, and you can apply if you want to. It does not come with a I-94. You would receive an I-94 at a port of entry, not with the visa. You would not need a Social Security to attend school, and if you got one, it would not be for employment. The school does not provide you with a SS card. If you have family members here legally in the United States, they might be able to offer you shelter, but they cannot petition for your F-1 visa. You have to obtain the visa on your own. As for being "sure they will grant you the status" I would not count on it. You lived illegally in the U.S. for several years and your ties to Colombia are going to look very weak. Yo apuesto que nunca en mil años vas a recibir una visa.
