United Nations: Beneficial for dictators worldwide?
United Nations: Beneficial for dictators worldwide?
This is a recurrent topic (at least in me) but I feel its worthy to post about it because today the Honduran president got ousted (or so we have been told, at least). I am not from Honduras or anything of the like. I was born in Europe but since very small lived in various Latin American countries. And this message is not a reply to what I have seen in Honduras, but more of a generic reflection overall. This time, I will not talk about the United States, everyone talks about them everyday anyways. Today, the European Union, the United Nations, the Organization of the Americas States, they are all condeming the (coup?) against Zelaya. In the past, they had also reacted in a similar way regarding Chavez, and regarding Ecuador before Correa. They also seem to criticize the way Colombia takes ahead its internal war, but hey, its a war, not a Disney Park. Its fine, its OK to criticize coups and such. But the problem with these organizations is that, in reality, they are useless, and if anything, they help dictators. I will say it very simple. -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations when thousands of people were executed in Cuba by Castro? Nowhere! -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations in front of the fact that Fidel Castro has been the king of Cuba, in power for 50 years? Nowhere! What did Europe do about Fidel? Reward him by building hotels! -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations when Burma fell under a big dictatorship? Nowhere! -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations in front of the events at Darfur? Nowhere! -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations during Tianan Meng (spelling?)? Nowhere! -Does the European Union or United Nations care about North Korea? No, all they do is blame each other. Does the European Union / United Nations care that Chavez wants to stay in power until 2050 no matter what anyone says? No. Do they care that Chavez ordered to throw tear gas and jail any student or whoever protests? No. Did they care when the Human Rights watch representative got expelled from Venezuela with no reason? No. What does the European Union do? They pretty much support Colombian guerrillas and Peruvian guerrillas, and any government that puts a stop to them is quickly criticized. -Where the fuck is/was the European Union / United Nations when three white men were shot in Bolivia for political reasons? Nowhere! Did they even bother trying to investigate if the claims of a potential magnicide were true? Not at all. -If Zelaya was not ousted, or if he comes back to power, and manages to stay in power for 30 years, will the European Union / United Nations do something about it? You guessed it, they won't. So all the democracy and freedom talk done by the European Union, United Nations, and OAS, is pretty much garbage, all they have achieved is to reward dictators and wannabe- dictators, without any real concern about freedom for people. The European Union and the United Nations and the OAS are made up of a bunch of guys who drink wine and who don't give a crap about the foot citizen. Thats the truth about them. All of these groups could be abolished, and the World would not be very different, except that dictators would not have anyone to support them (internationally). The World can go without them. They only defend freedom in paper. United Nations: They are as useless, or maybe more, than the League of Nations in the 1930s. Adding to the list - Exactly! - They pretty much helped Mugabe. And (also in Africa) they didn't care about the killings in Rwanda.

The United Nations is very useful! It allows us to give money to all of these other countries so that they will like us! You cons just don't understand that if we keep sending money overseas and apologize everyone in the world will like us.
2 :
Abolish the UN! I say.
3 :
The UN is an extremely anti-American organization and should be kicked out of our country.
4 :
The United Nations should be disbanded and have their headquarters thrown out of the United States. The united nations is worthless and it does not serve a good purpose. We in the US are paying the majority of their budget and we are not getting anything for it.
5 :
Yes. the UN has done more to help keep totalitarian dictatorships in power than the dictators themselves.
6 :
theyre not beneficial and not dictators, theyre useless, were paying 1/5 or more of their damn tab and they never do anything that the whole organization was designed for. if it was they would have put down saddam hussein simply because he was genocidal, (no weapons shit) or help in Darfur, or anything ELSE they were designed for. leave the UN, its not like they have helped us much since Korea anyway.
7 :
You know that they are propping up Mugabe with rice shipments after what he did to the Zimbabwe economy with his genocide of white sharcroppers. I believe that that exactly falls into the definition of "beneficial for dictators worldwide." Peace

Well I am a American I hope you don't mind me posting here. I personally agree that I am not a supporter of the united nations. I think they are a great sponge on our country. We house them here in our country and give them huge financial support. I think its time they started paying rent for the huge New York head quarter they get here. We are also tired of being the big brother to the world who appointed us as such? what country today says thank you to americans for all the financial aid they have received from us. Why should any of us work to pay taxes that support the efforts of such a organization? I think I will post a few on the united nations myself. Thanks for your insight.
9 :
The UN should be run out of this country (and every other decent democratic country, if we still qualify as such) at the POINT OF A BAYONET.

SPAIN OR LATIN AMERICA?
SPAIN OR LATIN AMERICA?
ok.... i've got plenty of time to decide...but just a general idea of what to expect from both of these countries/regions i study history & culture & spanish and will be going as part of my degree i've heard plenty of horror stories about central & south America... but being a young lady quite into her reggaeton & caribbean vibes i feel i would be missing out if i went to spain. here are MY own pros & cons.... please add to if you know any it will help me get a realistic picture and make a better descision! Spain pros: closer to home & within the EU moorish influence (history) varied climate safe cheaper, inc travel cons: no reggaeton :-( is good for history...but not as much as Latin Am LA pros: reggaeton! :-) history history history spanish spanish spanish beaches beaches beaches hot hot hot CONS: SAFE????? far from home cost of travel to and from UK healthcare HMMMM descisions descisions......... I'm thinking maybe Cartagena in Colombia as its a. on the coast b. student area c. good schools (Nueva Lengua) d. relatively safe compared to the Colombian interior. what is a realistic picture of safety in Colombia?? Im not gonna be walking around with a camera dangling from my neck, or dripping in jewelry. If i do say so myself, i could (maybe) pass as a Colombian. or Southern Spain.... but havent delved into that yet. What do you think kids?????? All info welcome :-) SORRY forgot to add DONT want to be overwhelmed by tourists like myself. Some are ok but if its anything like Oxford Circus on a Friday at 6pm, don't bother SORRY AGAIN! lol part of my studies includes the Afro-influence to these regions...... does Cartagena have a prominent Afro influence?? any other LA countries???

it's really your decision i'll just add to your pros and cons about latin america. LATIN AMERICA has adventure written all over it. Any where you go in Latin America has it's own vibe but everyone of them are nice. You can learn about their history and learn in more depth about Spain in America and how they screwed everything up. You can enjoy perfect weather depending on where you go (Guatemala has the best weather ever). Also..the beaches? CONS CONS CONS: you gotta realize latin america is run by drug trafficking. mara salvatrucha, the 18th street, north hollywood...these gangs run these countries. and they're very messed up they like to sever people and they're not scared to do anything. and trust me they can tell if you're a tourist or not..and last time i checked tourists have money. also, don't expect everything to be as modern as spain.
2 :
Latin america of course but I prefer both europe and america ---- it will be a nice idea cartagena yes have afro culture but if you go to the capital Bogota Dc experience the spanish and european herence and modernity go to other cities

what can i say to him?
what can i say to him?
okay, so there's this exchange student in some of my classes from Colombia, his name is Juan, and he's really cute (my friends and i kinda think i might have a crush). I'm really trying to get my self up to introduce myself to him and talk to him, but what can i say to him specifically? school's been in four like 5 days now, and he hasn't made any friends except for an indian exchange student also in our class. the only day i can talk to him this week would be tomorrow (thursday). i'm not a very out going person and i've got nothing that is interesting enough to say, but i want something that could keep up conversation... by the looks of it, he doesn't talk to much either. If you could help that would be greatly appreciated! thanks, LindsayFelipe

Just go up to him and say, "Hi! I'm Lindsay." (: I'm sure it'll be easy from there.
2 :
Just go up to him, introduce yourself, ask him how he's liking it here, offer him help/advice. Then tell him about yourself as well, it's like quid pro quo.
3 :
start out by asking him to describe where he is from. If he just gives short answers, you will have to keep him going by asking more questions. Ask him if he is familiar with the states. You might want to think of questions before you talk to him and make sure there are alot so that the conversation keeps going. Let him talk with out interrupting. Tell him if he has any questions at any time while here, he can ask you. Good Luck!
4 :
he is in ur class girl in the year of skul u wil prob be hatin him lke 1 yr from now or u wil be goin out wit him so just for now just say hi am lindsay n den he wil tlk to u n if u dont hhav a pencil or sumtin just ask him lol ther is alot of thing to say to a prson
5 :
well as corny as it may seem, start of with hello and then introduce yourself. then be like, "so how do u like the states so far?" (or the name of the town u live in would be best). then ask about the family he's staying with and little questions here and there. offer to show him around town and the cool spots where u live. once your class is over say bye and "see you tomorrow". the next day say hello and start talking to him when you get a chance. sooner or later you and Juan are gonna be friends and talking a lot. Hope This Helps. I would totally like to know if you used my advice and if it worked. :-)

32 yr's old German wants to study in the US! Chances!?
32 yr's old German wants to study in the US! Chances!?
Hi, I'm 32yr's old and from Germany. Work in a fulltime-job and attend a nightschool, where I get my university entrance qualification (High school graduation). My extracurricular activity are (only) chief editor of the school magazine and president of the student body. My average grade are B and some A's. I'm very ambitious and want to study Georgetown, PennU, Colombia, Dartmouth. What do you think are my chances? Seriously!

At 32 you would stick out like a sore thumb at typical colleges. At a school like Dartmouth for example, all the students will be under 25. These schools cater to a young crowd as do their activities. You need to look at schools that cater to the older student too. In the US you would be know as a non traditional student. Columbia would be a good choice as they have a program for such people called GSP. Penn and Yale also have such programs. Harvard has the extension school that offers mostly night classes to older students. As for chances, you would need very impressive grades and SAT scores to get into these schools. Basically, you will need to have been a very top student wherever you are coming from. You'll also need a great deal of money. Each of these programs will cost anywhere from $15-$50K per year depending on number of classes and the program. Financial aid for an older international student will be all but impossible.

Australia was really fun when i went out there....
2 :
Scotland or France, but if you are in the U.S or Canada you should defenetly stay there
3 :
I think switching places with someone from Argentina, Coast Rica, or Panama would be pretty awesome!!
4 :
I've been to Australia, that place rocked, Hong Kong is great especially the nightlife and the shopping, the U.S. because it's multicultural, and Mexico is pretty cool too. I hope this helps.
5 :
Hong khong is kool pretty cloth and beautiful view or china you can go to china wall the world wonder
6 :
The main question that should be asked first is "WHAT" not "WHERE"...some countries and colleges are better than others depending on the major not the geographical location.
7 :
It depends what you want to learn. If you just want to know the country I would recomend Czech Republic or Mexico.
8 :
I would avoid a country whose dominant culture is one that shuns women or relegates them to second-class. This would include Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Turkey. I would avoid a poor country with dangerous roads, terrible infrastructure and high crime. Half of the countries on your list fit into this category. I would certainly avoid China, Argentina,Paraguay, Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, Ghana,Honduras, Phillipines, Hong Kong, Colombia, Thailand, Dom. Repub, Ecuador, Mexico, Venezuela (in addition to the countries I already listed above). Maybe i should have just listed the few countries left that I would recommend: France, Norway, Austrialia, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Iceland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, UK, Netherlands, USA, Finland, New Zealand. That's it...

Australia is great. We talk english, have warm weather and great places to go. We are also very friendly and will always help another person out if they need it. Try to go to NSW or QLD though if you come here. We use to have exchange students at my school and they always had so much fun with us and they made really strong friendships with so many people.

G'day, This is what I know abt Australia, since I was an international students there... There are only 42 (soon to be 43) universities in Australia, all of them are fully accredited and they are tightly regulated, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from. The most important thing is you have to READ the course information carefully, since some courses may have the same name but different content. To find out the course that you are taking and where it is offered, I suggest you to go to Dept of Education, Science and Technology (http://cricos.dest.gov.au) and IDP Education Australia website (www.idp.edu.au). IDP is an organisation that gives information to international students who wants to continue their study in Australia. You need to make sure what psychology you want to study. Once decided on the uni, fill in the application form and send it together with certified copy of your academic qualification. Living cost... Sydney and Canberra have the highest living cost, followed by Melbourne & Brisbane, then Perth, Darwin, Adelaide & Tasmania the lowest. I am attaching a weblink from one of the uni in Melbourne as an indication. Hope this helps. E-mail me at mikegun(at)studentfirst.com.au if you have more questions abt study in Australia. Good luck for your study and welcome to Australia :)

First of all, where are you from?? I'm from Indonesia, and studying in Indonesia will give u a great experience to embrance in a new culture ( and to Mr. PS --> WHO SAID WE SHUN WOMEN???? U watch too much political news!) Currently I am studying in Malaysia, level of english is quite ok. I would say it is a mixture of quite good facilities and standard of living with a quite strong local culture too I studied in Sweden before, and FELT IN LOVE WITH SWEDEN!! Everything was perfect, i love systembolaget, i love the cute guys, love all the pre-parties, parties, and after-parties, all in all i LOVE SWEDEN SO DAMN MUCH! (But i do not suggest u to come to Sweden if u r from a 4 season country, u'll find the weather is really irritating!) I've travelled a lot to Singapore and visit many Singaporean universities.. the education level is the highest in South East Asia.. people comman understanding about english is very high ( but then u must get used to their Sing-lish accent) and the infrastructure is good. I've travelled to Thailand too and it is a very unique place in a sense that they value foreigners very much but still u feel it pity coz u find it difficult to understand their accent.. I've travelled to Hong Kong, and probably will not wanna go there anymore coz it's too expensive for having leisure time! ( even my Swedish friend said so!) I've travelled to Norway and Denmark , beautiful countries, great education, but somehow i still prefer Sweden... I stayed during Winter in China, the only place that i enjoyed the most was Urumqi, Xinjiang (believe it or not!)! Anyway, i myself will go for an exchange student program.. my 1st study abroad will be in Turkey for 1 semester... and the 2nd semester i will spend in Ecuador..Simply because i am a person who loves to learn language n culture.. exploring new places which is something really new for me is the point...
