Can a foreign student get a grant/scholarship to go to school in the USA?

Can a foreign student get a grant/scholarship to go to school in the USA?
I have a friend from Colombia. She is here working here in the US as an Au-Pair. She wants to pursue her masters here in bacteriology. Is it possible for her to get a grant or scholarship being that she is not from the US but wants to study here? If so, what is a good starting place for more information? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Grants are given to US citizens though some grants award it to permanent residents, but not for tourists or those with working visas The best place to check is through the schools who will accept her. I know of many foreigners who come to the US and study here. The first semester is tough to get any grants or scholarships, so the best bet is to have your own funds and use it for the first sem. Once you go to the second semester, you've got more options for grants

I know that you are aware of it, but you will need to greatly improve your English. You mention that it would be expensive to go to school in the UK, but it is equally expensive in the US, if not more so.

I am trying to find a foreign exchange/study abroad program at a university level in Colombia. I am having a hard time finding some. Try Rosario and Andes universities in Bogotá, they're both used to having foreign students (from Belgium, France, Japan, former USSR, etc) and some of their classes are in English.

As a grad student, are you normally permitted to sleep in dorms of that university?
Yes, my question is really that simple. I tried googling but couldn't find anything. I'm asking about Colombia btw.
Higher Education (University +) - 2 Answers

What do you mean, sleeping in dorms? If what you mean is staying in dorms, I think graduate students can do that. But if you need a place to sleep for a night or two because you have something important to do in the campus, I don't think there's a vacant place in dorms. I'm not studying in Columbia, but I used to be a research student in a uni. As a research student I got a small office in the faculty building, and I usually slept in the office if thesis writing was overwhelming. I didn't need to obtain a permission from the faculty to stay overnight but I needed to let the janitors know I was there. Otherwise they would be very shocked to see someone already in the office at 5am! :)
2 :
Only if you have a signed contract. :) But yes, they do have housing options for graduate students, including "dormitory-style suites." They also offer help to students who want to find their own housing.

Does buying pot send money to Mexico or Colombia and does it cause people in those countries to be murdered?

Does buying pot send money to Mexico or Colombia and does it cause people in those countries to be murdered?
There were thousands of killings of innocent people in Colombia 10 years ago due to the drug trade. America is the largest consumer of south American illegal Drugs. Now the murder rate in Mexico is going thru the roof in drug wars and the illegal drug trade is closer to the USA than it was before. So the real question is.. Can we apply legal punishement to college students for funding the Drug/Murder trade?
Law & Ethics - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Both. And yes, we should be punishing people more for drug possession/use. But society these days is so dam confused, uncaring, high, and ignorant. For god sakes, Lady GaGa was found on coke, and she said in a report that she does pot and she is proud of it. Why is she not in jail? Why in god's name is Charlie Sheen not in jail? Hell, with all the drugs he bought the traders probably have a summer home.
2 :
Not if you buy American.
3 :
Most of the marijuana found in the United States is grown in the United States and all drugs should simply be decriminalized taxed a regulated like tobacco and alcohol all prohibition does is create criminal enterprises if the drug is legal and yields no profit their is no reason to kill each other over it. Why is it that its harder for kids to get cigarettes and alcohol than it is heroin crack pot meth ect because its controlled and regulated. I mean really its such a simple logical look the the prohibition of alcohol and the Violence and criminal empires it created its how many drug cartels were their that imported narcotics into the united states from the 1800s-1930s ? And at the person saying we need harsher punishments for drugs smuggling drugs in most of other country's that bring in coke and heroin punish it with the death penalty obviously that doesn't work you know because it perfect logic that someone with an illegal plant should spend more time in prison than someone who rapes children
4 :
Yes, they should be responsible. However, I believe the legalization of these drugs internationally would be even better, sponsored by the government or approved and legalized vendors. I am Colombian, and drugs have ruined by country. However, if they don't legalize, then they must fight.
5 :
Dude you got a very strong argument there. Sadly it is the true the major consumers here in USA are idnereeclty responsible for the things going on down there and the things going on down there are very ugly. Consumers here. Producers there. Buyers here Drug lords there. Drug lords get kill violence and destruction of communities. This drug bussiness creates jobs and for some you got two choices immigrate illegally (chances of getting caught or die and problems with the goverment) to USA or become a drug dealer (average life when you become one 4 years) leaving a family wife widowed and kids with no father figure leave alone for some years mom dies kids grow to repeat the same cycle immigrate or become a drug leader some do neither grow up turn to be crazy and become alcoholic and drug addcits. The Mexican social fabric gets disrupted and does not stop more grief to a nation already full open wounds and if the Mexican literature and writer Octavio Paz is correct Mexicanos siguen siendo hijos de la chingada Mexican are and will be sons of the motherf*** bitch idk if that translates to that ... for not seens they dreams realized and achivied ...

You are still young. I would definitely take all the AP classes you can get so you can raise your GPA. You cant always tell if they will pick you remember many students are going to apply who have 4.0's and who are very well rounded who do sports. Make yourself different by doing something that will stand out. Taking up an internship is always good and shows them that you are dedicated.
4 :
Well, as you have it spelled - COLOMBIA that is the name of a country in South America. You can go there with any grades. If you are talking about Columbia, the University then your GPA seems good. It does worry me tho that you can't properly spell the name of the University you hope to apply to.

How long does the process of student visa takes?

How long does the process of student visa takes?
Filled out my request for a university student from Denver, Colorado. I am awaiting a response. to proceed to the next step of filling the visa formularion and thus send it to the American Embassy in Colombia. my question is how long it takes to give me a student visa? college next semester begins in the fall of 2010. wanted to know if I have to travel to that date or I can travel as soon as I get the visa. or someone has experience in this case, who can explain everything about this visa. Thx
Embassies & Consulates - 1 Answers

Most embassies can print the visa the day after the interview if everything was in order and you were authorized by the officer. You may apply for a student visa up to 120 days in advance, and enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the program start date listed on your I-20 form from the University. It's best to apply for your visa well in advance in case there are any problems or your application requires additional processing. If you wish to enter more than 30 days before the start of the program, you'll need to apply for and qualify for a visitor visa and change non-immigrant status in the U.S. with an I-539 application ($300). You need to make this intent clear to the consular officer at the Embassy/Consulate and the Customs and Border Patrol immigration inspector at the port of entry.

one or two hundred dollars.
3 :
Get a Debit card! Use that to get Colombian cash from ATM machines. Don't bring a lot of currency, just fifty bucks to get you around until you find an ATM. Then take out what you need and only that. The charge for this security is very small when you consider the safety it will buy you. ATMs are virtually everywhere. Do be careful when you use one to know who is standing around you, or use the ones inside a grocery store or a pharmacy. They are safest. It's the best and safest way to handle money in Colombia.
4 :
Depends on where you are going in Colombia.
5 :
Edison is right. Take your ATM card. I like DaVivienda you can get 500k pesos per day. DONT take a lot of cash. Good way to get robbed or worse. Dont flash cash.. and if at all possible hang with friends who speak spanish.
6 :
Medellin is awesome I live here, how is your spanish?? Hook me up if you want or need any help. Edison is def. right the service charge is 1.50 gbp and carrying a debit card is safer here than anywhere else in the world as even if you lose it, for someone else to use it they will have to provide a matching name photo ID + your passport number to pay for anything. So it's all good. When are you coming? We have the Christmas lights up at the moment and they are amazing

My friend is a student at the university in colombia, south america. when her term is finished she wants to visit here for a few months, but she says i have to write a letter of invitation to her and i have to go through an investigation with an embassy or something. we don't really understand. please help.

Here's the scoop. Colombians are required to have a Visa to travel here. That would take time and can be hard to get. Americans can visit there as a tourist on their passports. So you can go there. I know of a 3rd option. You may both visit Panama on your passports. As of 4 years ago Colombians no longer need visas to travel and tour there.
2 :
just google it. "US travel from Colombia"...or tell her to check on a "Student Visa". I think that this is the easiest. good luck
3 :
She will have to apply for a B-2 visa...starting with the page below and following all instructions there. You may write a letter for her to submit with her application. You need to give your name, address, contact info, and state that you will provide housing and meet all your friends financial needs while she is in the states. she will submit your letter with her application. However, often , that letter actually means nothing. The BIG thing the visa officer at her interview will look for is that she has compelling reasons to return to her home when her approved time in the u.S. is up. This is very hard for a young university student to do. They will be looking for proof that she has a home of her own, a business, a large amount of money in the bank. They ALWAYS presume that the person applying for a tourist visa id going to violate that visa and stay in the U.S. They clearly state that on the visa application site. It happens so often, that it is therfore almost impossible for a young person from Latin America to get a visa to the U.S....even with a sponsor. If she happens to be from a very wealthy family and still lives with them, she may have a chance.
4 :
I wouldn't get involved. Its very difficult and you could face problems if she decides to stay here permanently.
5 :
Elizabeth: first you need to know is the US government trough they embassy in Colombia is who decide who is come and who is not. The process for a Colombian obtain the visa is the follow: make the appointment in the Us embassy in Bogota and pay the fee for, this just allow to you friend can see the INS officer , from there , they will see and check different things like what she do in Colombia, income,if she have warnings on US, and other aspects, basic they look for she don't come to stay here as Illegal. Is a different types of visa: tourist, business, work, fiance, training and others and each one have conditions, requirements and benefices on each category and any one is only approval by the Embassy,is weird but some times you have every thing to come here and they denied you and other times just give you the visa just with out ask nothing, the document you friend ask is probably 2 letters: one is a just plain invitation where you wrote you are invite this friend because....... the second one is a legal form call I134 I believe, and is affidavit where you make you self responsible for you friend housing and boring for specific times days , you will found the form in the INS web site, but even you send this letter is not guaranty of she is going to get her visa. I suggest she toke the chance and see if the luck is with her and go to the embassy and follow the process, the second option you fly to Colombia and in that case the only risk is you wanna stay there since is so beautifully, and the third option will be meet in some other country probable like Panama where you don't need visa and she just pay $5 for her visa ( she buy the permit in the panama airport at the customs) or maybe costa rica but in that case she need to get visa.

Which town in Colombia is best to learn a language?

Which town in Colombia is best to learn a language?
I am returning to Colombia, which I visited on my gap year four years ago, in order to take a place up on a language course, hopefully live with a family, and finally learn Spanish, which I've always wanted to do. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on which town is best. I liked Cali, Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena, all for different reasons. I would love to go to a young, vibrant town, good for student life, where I can meet lots of fun people and have a lot to do, but also a place whose universities/colleges/language schools have an excellent reputation. Any advice would be most appreciated! is Spanish in Cali a lot more difficult to understand than in Bogota then?
Other - Latin America - 8 Answers

1 :
I think you can travel to Cali, which is towards the north of Colombia. It's remarkably beautiful and different from most other Colombian cities. Cali, surrounded by mountains, rainforests and of course the increasing rate in its infrastrctural developments. You've got Salsa, friends and of course a remarkable mixture of both Spanish and Indian (Amerindian) descendants living together in one city. As for Bogota, which is the capital of Colombia, is a lively city but the crime rate is very high. Even though that recent reports say that crime may have reduced, viloent protests in the capital do occur occassionally. You can therefore, cosider Cali as a substitute option. Your studies on Colombia and its history would also be highlighted during you're visit in Colombia for Spanish language studies.
2 :
Colombia has beautiful cities, but keep in mind that what you're looking for is a place to learn spanish. I'd suggest the capital ,of course, Bogota.
3 :
Go to Bogota, you will find all of that, plus the Spanish accent in Bogota is very neutral, easier to understand than the other cities you mentioned. Bogota also has some of the best Universities.
4 :
I would say bogota because it has the clearest spanish. It also has the best culture and nightlife.
5 :
I agree with nmaria, Bogota for having the best universities. (People have nicknamed our capital the Athens of South America for that simple fact mentioned).
6 :
I would go to Cali. It is minutes away from cold weather, has an amazing weather all day and not to mention the 5pm breeze it is famous for! People in Cali are much nicer to strangers than people in Bogota, maybe it;s the cold... lol. Besides, there are the same language schools basically, but less people will talk to you in english in Cali which helps you learn faster... and if you feel like going home you can always stop by Martyn's, a bar owned by an american (John Martyn) with american music and drinks which will make you feel at home!
7 :
Well...Bogota, Medellin and Cali are consider the best...but, the best for what you are looking for is Cali. Salsa and everything is over there. Cali is also consider the youngest city, and it has many places to pass a good time, Universities are good in cali, specially UNIVALLE. it's one of the best in Latin america and you always find things to do in Cali. Medellin is kind of the same thing. Bogota too, the difference is that bogota is colder, but it's a big metropolis like new york city or LA...good luck
8 :
The best is Bogota

How to change a work visa to a student visa in US?
I am currently working in the US for a family. I already extended once and I am scheduled to go back at the end of the year. you'd first have to apply and be accepted at a US university or college. they would have to issue you an I-20 student form and register you in the SEVIS student database. at that point, you would need to file an I-539 with USCIS to change status. if it's approved, you could remain in the US in student status, but if you left the US and wanted to return, you'd have to apply for a student visa back home before you could come back. you can find the form at www.uscis.gov in the forms section. I think the filing fee is $300.

ESL teach at a University in Colombia and I need help with ideas of how to teach phonetics to Spanish speakers

ESL teach at a University in Colombia and I need help with ideas of how to teach phonetics to Spanish speakers
I am a Canadian teacher and I am teaching at a University in Colombia, my students are very frustrated with the English language at the moment, as they believe everything is pronounced completely differently from how it is spelt. I would like to teach them phonetics and though I have experience explaining phonetics to children, does anyone have an idea as to the best way to begin with university students?
Teaching - 3 Answers

I suggest books and cassette tapes or Cd's for Spanish speaking people who are studying English.
2 :
Hi. I teach community ESL to adult Spanish speakers in San Francisco and my curriculum is very flexible. Therefore I use Dr. Seuss books like Hop on Pop and Green Eggs and Ham to teach reading. Many but not all Dr. Seuss books were written specifically for teaching phonetics, so the words are chosen for this purpose. Be careful in choosing the right book - some are more useful than others. My students also love the books because they are fun and silly.
3 :
spelt?? Anyways, I've had success in working with mirrors and minimal pairs. Sometimes it's the placement of articulation (tongue, teeth, lips, palate, etc) that throws ELLs off. Don't work it to the point of frustration, though. Come up with a few patterned examples (ie., bill, will, fulfill, until, pill, ill / bell, well, fell, tell, relevant, telephone, elephant...).

You may be allowed to work in Canada if you meet one of the following requirements: You want to work as a graduate assistant; Your employment is part of a course of study, such as a work term during the year, as in cooperative programs; You want to work on campus; or You want to work after graduation in a study-related job for up to one year So you must try to find out work there rather than finding a cheap way to go there.

Go to the high school office and tell them you need to speak with someone about your graduation requirements and credit -- that person will probably be the guidance counselor assigned to you. They can help you figure out transfer credit from your time in Colombia, or if you can move into the appropriate classes. The important thing is to make them want to help you -- don't attack them for making a mistake, just let them know what you need and ask how you can make it happen. Good luck!

I wouldn't go, or let any of my kids go, there probably is a set up waiting for them.

It might be a good idea for American students to visit Tehran, so they can see what it looked like .

how can I host an exchange student in Colombia?

how can I host an exchange student in Colombia?
I have been searching up exchange student agencies, but they only look for north american families to host international students. I am 17 and I have been an exchange student in Germany before. I also lived in the US for 5 years and I was born in Brazil. I now live in Colombia and I would love to host a student here! My brother is leaving for a year so I`ll be lonely with my parents! If you are interested write your email address below and I will contact you!

Your best bet is to use an exchange program. YFU and AFS both exchange to Colombia, contact them and apply! http://www.yfu.org/co/index.html http://www.afs.org.co/col_sp/home

Rotary Youth Exchange is another possible source for exchange students. If you get in touch with your local Rotary Club I'm sure they'd have a student for you to host.
